Chapter 7 - The Downward Collapse

The shockwave from the sub-basement blast rippled through the polished marble floor, sending a spiderweb of violent cracks racing across the room. Guests screamed, dropping their smartphones as the bright flashlights shattered into chaotic arcs of light across the vaulted ceiling. Julian stumbled, the heavy silver candelabra flying from his grip and clattering uselessly against a shattered marble tile.
"Get down!" Marcus shouted, diving forward to tackle Eleanor and little Lily just as a massive geyser of dark, stagnant water erupted from the open hatchway.
The water flooded the center of the ballroom, mixing with the chemical blue solvent to create a foaming, hissing pool that immediately began to eat away at the foundation's structural pillars. Margaret stood her ground near the service doors, her dark green evening gown soaked at the hem, her expression a mask of grim satisfaction as she watched the panic unfold among the elite.
"The structural supports are giving way!" Arthur yelled over the roar of rushing water, his face twisted with absolute terror as he scrambled on all fours toward the exit. "The entire east wing is collapsing into the drainage tunnels!"
Richard remained standing calmly near the edge of the yawning abyss, his cracked smartphone still gripped tightly in his pale hand. He looked down at the churning water below, where heavy metal lockboxes were bobbing to the surface like corks, their rusted seals broken by the pressure.
"Run, everyone!" Eleanor yelled, helping Lily to her feet while clutching her hand tightly. She looked back at Richard, her voice straining against the ambient roar. "Richard, you can't stay here! The tunnels are flooding!"
"I spent three years in those dark tunnels, Eleanor," Richard called back, his voice carrying an unnatural, echoing resonance. "I know every brick, every valve, and every secret escape route these criminals tried to hide. But Julian isn't going anywhere."
Julian, realizing the doors were jammed shut by the structural shift, turned back in sheer panic. His eyes widened in horror as Richard stepped forward, bridging the gap between them across the crumbling marble.
"Julian," Richard whispered softly, grabbing his brother by the collar of his tailored tuxedo with terrifying strength. "It's time to show our guests what is truly buried in the foundation's safe."
Julian thrashed wildly, his expensive silk tie tearing as Richard hauled him toward the open, flooding hatchway.

Before anyone could intervene, a blinding arc of blue electricity surged through the water from the depths below, illuminating the entire ballroom in a blinding, silent flash.
