Chapter 14 - The Deputy's Verdict

The red laser sights from the federal tactical rifles crisscrossed the ruined ballroom like a web of surgical laser lines, illuminating the frost-covered marble, the pooling chemical waste, and the terrified faces of the elite guests. Deputy Attorney General Sarah Vance stepped through the splintered mahogany doorway, her immaculate charcoal-gray pantsuit completely unaffected by the chaos of the evening. She surveyed the devastation with cold, calculating eyes before fixing her gaze entirely on Eleanor, who was still kneeling on the floor.
"Eleanor Vance," Sarah's voice cut through the damp air with chilling precision. "You are standing in the middle of a compromised federal crime scene, holding unauthorized financial archives, alongside a rogue detective and a convicted felon."
Marcus stepped smoothly in front of Eleanor, resting his hand casually near his holstered service weapon, though he knew drawing against a dozen tactical agents was suicide. "Sarah, check your encrypted terminal. The master archive from the sub-basement proves the Vanguard Foundation has spent the last decade laundering orphan trust funds into offshore accounts controlled by Arthur and Julian."
"I don't need to check an archive, Marcus," Sarah replied coldly, taking a slow, deliberate step onto the ruined floor. Her heels clicked sharply against the scarred stone. "Because the Department of Justice didn't authorize a raid tonight. We authorized a containment."
Arthur scrambled toward Sarah, his face flushed with desperate relief, his silver-trimmed suit ruined with mud and sweat. "Sarah! Thank God! They staged a hostile takeover, they flooded the sub-basement, and they tried to murder us all! You have to arrest them immediately!"
Sarah didn't even look down at Arthur. She raised her hand slightly, and two tactical agents immediately moved forward, pressing heavy steel cuffs around Arthur's wrists with a sharp, metallic click.
"You're under arrest, Arthur," Sarah said flatly. "Not for what Eleanor did, but for failing to incinerate the secondary physical ledgers before the gala started. You became a liability the moment you let a seven-year-old child near that cleaning bucket."
A stunned silence fell over the remaining guests. Eleanor slowly rose to her feet, her sparkly gold dress caked in mud and chemical residue, her eyes burning with suppressed fury. "You knew, Sarah. You knew about the embezzlement from the very beginning."
"The Vanguard Foundation funds half of our federal oversight initiatives, Eleanor," Sarah said, her tone devoid of remorse. "Institutions larger than ourselves require sacrifices. Richard was foolish enough to try and expose it three years ago, and Julian was foolish enough to bungle the cover-up tonight."
Julian let out a weak, desperate chuckle from the floor as agents grabbed him as well. "We're all part of the same family, Sarah. You can't put us all away."
"Watch me," Sarah whispered. She turned back to Eleanor, her expression hardening. "And as for you, Eleanor... you found files that were never meant to see the light of day. Hand over the override key."
Eleanor clenched her fist tightly around the blood-stained brass key in her pocket. Beside her, little Lily stepped forward from the shadows, her big eyes fixed on Sarah with an unnerving, ageless intensity.

Before Sarah could signal the agents to search Eleanor, the entire building gave one final, violent shudder, and the overhead emergency lights flickered and died completely, plunging the ballroom into absolute darkness.
