Chapter 10 - The Second Descent

The rhythmic tapping sound reverberated through the flooded marble floor, growing louder and more insistent with every passing second. It sounded like heavy iron striking concrete—a deliberate, calculated cadence that froze everyone in their tracks. Even the murmuring guests fell instantly silent, their eyes darting nervously toward the gaping black mouth of the sub-basement hatch.
"What is that noise?" a woman in a crushed silk gown whispered, clutching her companion's arm so tightly her knuckles turned white. "Is there someone else still down there?"
Richard slowly stood up, letting go of little Lily's hand. His expression hardened, all warmth vanishing from his gaunt features. He looked at Marcus, who still held Arthur pinned against the barricaded doors.
"It's not someone else," Richard said, his voice dropping to a harsh whisper. "It's what they left behind in the secondary vault when they sealed the lower levels three years ago."
Julian let out a hysterical, high-pitched laugh from the floor, blood trickling from a small cut on his forehead. "You think you've won, Richard? You think unlocking the financial drive changes anything? The secondary vault operates on a dead-man's switch. If the primary system is accessed without the master retinal scan, the floodgates to the city's main reservoir open automatically."
Marcus dropped his grip on Arthur, spinning around to face Julian with sheer disbelief. "Are you insane? That reservoir feeds half the metropolitan district! Opening those gates will flood the entire downtown area!"
"The switch was tripped the moment the tactical reader authenticated my biometric ID," Richard explained calmly, pulling a heavy brass key from his muddy tuxedo pocket and holding it up. "Which is why I brought this down from the tunnels. It's the manual mechanical override. But it requires two people to turn it simultaneously—one from the ballroom, and one from the sub-basement control room."
Eleanor stepped forward, her sparkly gold dress catching the erratic emergency lights. Without a moment's hesitation, she walked past the pooling chemical waste and stood right beside Richard, extending her hand toward the heavy brass key. "I'll go down with you, Richard. Someone has to hold the lower valve while you turn the surface lock."
"Eleanor, no!" Marcus shouted, lunging forward to grab her arm. "The lower level is structurally unstable! If those walls collapse, you'll be trapped under tons of marble and water!"
"If I don't go, thousands of innocent people lose their homes, Marcus," Eleanor replied, her voice unwavering and absolute. She looked down at little Lily, who nodded solemnly and handed Eleanor the damp white cloth. "Take care of her for me, Detective."

Richard wrapped his fingers around the brass key, sharing a resolute glance with Eleanor. Together, they knelt at the edge of the yawning, dark chasm of the sub-basement hatch, preparing to descend into the freezing abyss just as the heavy iron below burst open with a deafening screech of tearing metal.
