Chapter 4 - The Betrayed Notification

The glowing screen of Eleanor's phone displayed a single, flashing red notification from the Department of Justice: Authorization Revoked. Operation Stand Down.

"That's impossible," Eleanor whispered, her fingers trembling as she tapped frantically against the glass. "I spoke directly with the Deputy Attorney General this morning. This warrant was ironclad."

"Bureaucracy moves fast when you grease the right palms, darling," Arthur said, a triumphant smirk returning to his lips as he straightened his lapels. He looked around the ballroom, his confidence fully restored as the guests began to shuffle uncomfortably, unsure of who to trust. "You thought you could orchestrate a coup during the dessert course and walk away with the keys to the kingdom? The Vanguard Foundation belongs to the founders. And right now, that's me and Julian."

Marcus stared at the notification over Eleanor's shoulder, his expression darkening. "That authorization code... it's a Tier One override. Only the Director of National Security can issue that remotely."

"Which happens to be sitting on my advisory board," Julian crowed, stepping past Margaret and the white bucket with renewed swagger. He looked down at little Lily, who shrank back against Eleanor's legs. "And as for this little brat and her scrubbing performance—security, take her to the basement holding room until we deal with the adults."

Two burly men in identical black suits stepped out from the shadows near the service entrance, their expressions completely devoid of empathy. They moved toward Lily with heavy, deliberate strides.

"Stay back!" Eleanor shouted, spreading her arms wide to shield the child. "Touch her and I swear I will burn this entire foundation to the ground—every financial record, every offshore account, every hidden asset!"

"You don't have the legal authority to burn anything, Mrs. Vance," the larger of the two guards said in a gravelly voice, reaching past Eleanor's shoulder to grab Lily's small arm.

Before his fingers could graze her white dress, Margaret dropped the heavy white bucket.

The impact was deafening in the marble-floored ballroom. Gallons of shimmering blue chemical waste splashed outward, soaking the guards' polished shoes and hissing as it reacted with the stone floor, releasing a thick plume of white vapor that instantly blinded everyone in the vicinity.

"Margaret, what have you done?!" Arthur screamed through the haze, coughing violently as the acrid smoke filled the air.

Through the dense white fog, Margaret's voice rang out, clear and resonant, carrying a secret that none of them were prepared to hear. "I didn't drop it, Arthur. The bucket has a bottom release valve. And it was opened from the inside of the sub-basement, not the outside."
