Chapter 2 - The Golden Shield

The collective intake of breath from the surrounding guests sounded like dry leaves scraping across pavement. Eleanor remained on her knees, her golden dress pooling around her like liquid sunlight on the cold stone, shielding Lily with her own body. The little girl buried her face in Eleanor's shoulder, her soft breathing hitching as she clutched the damp white cloth.
"You think you can lock us in, Arthur?" Eleanor asked, her voice dropping into a dangerous, controlled register. "This foundation has hundreds of live streams running right now. Every smartphone flashlights is a camera recording your panic."
"Let them record," Julian Vance sneered, stepping closer and nudging the edge of the heavy white bucket with his polished leather shoe. "People love a tragedy at a charity gala. It drives donations through the roof. But a security breach involving the foundation's proprietary asset? That stays in-house. Margaret, lock the grand doors."
Margaret didn't move. She stood like a statue in her dark green evening gown, her fingers locked around the white bucket handle. "I won't lock the doors, Mr. Vance. Not after what I saw down there tonight."
"You saw nothing!" Arthur snapped, his composure cracking as a bead of sweat rolled down his immaculate collar. "The girl was just cleaning up a spilled drink. That's all this is. A clumsy child ruining an expensive evening."
"It wasn't a drink, and you know it," Eleanor said, standing up gracefully while keeping one hand protectively on Lily's shoulder. She looked around the circle of high-society elites, her eyes locking onto familiar faces that suddenly looked entirely foreign. "Look at the composition of that liquid on the floor. It isn't water. It is a solvent used to erase digital storage drives. Someone in this room spent the last hour draining the Vanguard Foundation's financial archives."
A murmur rippled through the crowd. Several guests lowered their smartphones, their flashlights tilting downward to illuminate the dark puddle. The chemical was indeed eating away at the marble's top layer, leaving a dull, etched scar in the stone.
"That's absurd," whispered a prominent tech investor in a navy tuxedo, stepping back. "Are you saying someone stole our endowment funds during the dinner?"
"Not just the endowment," Eleanor replied, her gaze fixing squarely on Arthur. "They stole the identities of every orphan whose trust this foundation administers. Lily was brought here tonight specifically to witness the transfer."
Arthur's face twisted into an ugly grimace. He reached into his tuxedo jacket, his hand moving with suspicious swiftness toward his inner pocket.

"Don't move, Arthur," a calm voice echoed from the gallery stairs. Everyone turned to see Detective Marcus Vance descending into the ballroom, holding a sealed manila folder. "Because the federal warrant for your arrest was signed ten minutes before the gala even started."
