Chapter 5 - The Sub-Basement Echo

The acrid white vapor slowly dissipated under the emergency ventilation system, leaving the ballroom smelling faintly of ozone and old dust. The guests were coughing and pressing designer handkerchiefs to their mouths, their smartphone flashlights cutting erratic beams through the fading haze. On the floor, the chemical waste had eaten a clean, perfect circle into the marble, revealing not the sub-basement concrete, but a heavy steel hatchway embedded directly in the stone.
"A secret access port," Marcus muttered, dropping to one knee beside the smoking hatch. He ran his gloved hand along the perimeter of the rusted iron ring. "This wasn't built during the recent renovations. This dates back to the original construction of the estate in the nineteen-thirties."
Arthur pushed his way past the coughing guests, his face pale with panic. "Shut that hatch! Seal it immediately! It's structurally unsafe—there could be gas leaks!"
"There's no gas leak, Arthur," Margaret said quietly, standing beside the empty white bucket with her hands folded neatly over her dark green evening gown. "It's a lift. And someone just used it to come up."
The heavy steel hatch shuddered. A dull, rhythmic metallic clang echoed from beneath the floorboards, as if someone—or something—was striking the underside of the door with deliberate, heavy blows. One, two, three.
Little Lily stopped hiding behind Eleanor. She stepped forward, her small hand reaching out to touch the cold metal of the hatch. Her big eyes were wide, completely devoid of fear, filled instead with a strange, haunting recognition.
"They're coming to finish the cleaning," Lily whispered, her voice echoing strangely in the silent ballroom.
"Get away from there!" Julian yelled, lunging forward to grab the child by the shoulder.
Before Julian's hand could make contact, the steel hatch exploded upward on heavy hydraulic pistons. A cloud of freezing mist billowed out from the dark void below, and a figure emerged from the depths, wearing a blood-stained tuxedo and holding a cracked smartphone that was still broadcasting a live video feed to an unknown recipient.

The figure stepped into the light, and every breath in the room hitched. It was a man the entire Vanguard board had buried with full honors three years ago.
