Chapter 9 - The Final Protocol

Chloe froze at the foot of the stairs, her breath hitching in her throat. The phone in her hand went completely dark, the screen cracking down the center as an internal security fuse blew from the power surge.
"Marcus," Chloe breathed, stepping forward past Director Hayes. "You helped them lock the system three years ago, and now you're helping them burn the evidence?"
Marcus dropped the heavy wrench to the floor. It hit the concrete with a dull, heavy thud that seemed to punctuate the end of an era. He looked down at his hands, which were stained with black printer toner and grease.
"I didn't help them burn the evidence, Chloe," Marcus said softly, his voice devoid of its usual corporate arrogance. "I preserved it."
Arthur narrowed his eyes, stepping cautiously forward. "Explain yourself, Marcus. You were head of compliance. You signed off on the altered drug trials."
"Under duress," Marcus corrected, looking up to meet Arthur's piercing gaze. "Senator Vance threatened my family's safety the day you suffered your stroke, Arthur. He told me that if I didn't falsify the compliance reports to facilitate the hostile takeover, Clara would ensure my daughter’s medical grants were revoked and my son's university enrollment was terminated."
Clara—who had somehow managed to follow them down the stairs, dragging the hem of her ruined emerald green satin gown—lurched into the dimly lit basement, her eyes wide with frantic rage.
"Liar!" Clara screamed, lunging toward Marcus with her fingernails clawed. "You took the bribe willingly! You bought a penthouse in Monaco with the slush fund kickbacks!"
Director Hayes intercepted Clara smoothly, grabbing her wrists and forcing her back against the concrete wall with practiced ease. "Keep quiet, Mrs. Vance, or you'll find yourself in a holding cell before we even reach the station."
Marcus didn't even flinch as Clara thrashed against the federal officer. He reached into the inner pocket of his rumpled suit jacket and pulled out a small, heavy silver flash drive—completely distinct from the one he had just shown them.
"The drive I uploaded to the Senator's jet was a decoy," Marcus said steadily, holding up the silver drive. "It contains an encrypted payload designed to lock their onboard navigation systems and trigger an automatic distress beacon, forcing them to land at the exact federal checkpoint Director Hayes prepared in Maine."
Chloe stared at the silver drive, the tension in her shoulders slowly easing. "You played along the entire time just to set the trap."
"I had to," Marcus nodded. "It was the only way to get Senator Vance out of Washington and into federal airspace where his congressional immunity doesn't apply."
Before anyone could respond, the radio clipped to Director Hayes’s shoulder crackled to life with a burst of static, followed by an urgent voice from the Maine intercept team.

"Director Hayes, this is Alpha Lead. The private jet has been forced down on the tarmac. Suspects are contained."
