Chapter 13 - The Final Threat

Chloe pulled her phone from her blazer pocket. The screen flashed a high-priority encrypted message directly from Arthur's private terminal back at the headquarters in Portland.
CHLOE, RETURN TO THE ESTATE IMMEDIATELY. PERIMETER ALARM TRIGGERED.
A cold chill ran down her spine. She didn't hesitate. She pushed through the heavy courthouse doors and sprinted down the stone steps toward the curbside where her driver was waiting in a nondescript black sedan.
"Drive to the estate," Chloe ordered sharply as she slid into the back seat, slamming the door shut. "Step on it."
The driver nodded, recognizing the urgency in her voice, and pulled out into traffic, weaving expertly through downtown Portland's afternoon congestion.
Inside her mind, the pieces began to click together with terrifying clarity. Julian and Clara were locked away. Senator Vance was isolated in a maximum-security federal facility. The offshore accounts were frozen. Yet the perimeter alarm at the family estate had just been triggered.
"Who could be left?" Chloe whispered to herself, staring out the rain-streaked window as the city skyline gave way to the winding coastal roads leading toward the family property.
Her phone buzzed again. This time, it wasn't a text message; it was a live video feed from the estate’s front gate security camera.
Chloe tapped the notification, and her breath caught in her throat.
The screen showed a single figure standing motionless in the pouring rain directly in front of the massive wrought-iron gates of the Vance estate. The person wore a heavy, dark trench coat with the hood pulled low over their face, completely obscuring their features from the camera lens. But in their right hand, clearly visible under the security floodlights, was a familiar black leather whip.
The image froze for a split second before a synthetic, distorted voice began playing through the intercom feed attached to the camera.
"The countdown isn't over, Chloe," the voice rasped, dripping with a chilling, calculated malice. "Two hundred was just the warm-up."
Chloe's heart hammered against her ribs. She dialed her father’s direct line, but the call went straight to a dead tone—no ringing, no static, just absolute silence.
"Faster!" Chloe urged the driver, leaning forward against the front seat. "Step on the gas!"

The sedan surged forward, accelerating down the wet asphalt as the coastal fog rolled in thick and heavy from the ocean, shrouding the road ahead in an impenetrable grey haze.
