Chapter 7 - The Master Key

"Marcus," Clara whispered, her voice trembling so violently the syllables blurred together.

Director Hayes turned his sharp gaze toward her. "You recognize the name, Mrs. Vance—or should I say, Miss Sterling?"

Clara dropped her gaze to the floor, refusing to meet anyone's eyes. "Marcus isn't just an associate. He’s the head of internal compliance for the entire conglomerate. If he has the master decryption keys, he can wipe every server from mid-flight before the jet even touches down in Maine."

"Not if we cut the satellite uplink first," Chloe stated firmly, stepping forward. She picked up her phone, her fingers flying across the screen with practiced speed. "When Marcus worked under my father, he used a proprietary quantum encryption protocol that requires a physical relay station to maintain high-bandwidth transfers from airborne aircraft. If we intercept his signal through the regional telecommunications hub, we can redirect his data loop into a dead-end sandbox."

Hayes stared at her, impressed despite himself. "That's a high-risk play, Miss Vance. If you miss the window by even three seconds, the firewall will trigger an auto-destruct protocol that burns every single financial record we need for the indictment."

"I built the protocol with him," Chloe replied coldly, her eyes hard as flint. "I know every back door he left open. Give me a terminal."

Arthur placed a reassuring hand on his daughter's shoulder, nodding silently. "Set up the mobile workstation in the study. Director Hayes, secure the perimeter. We have less than ten minutes before that jet clears the coastal radar."

As the group moved swiftly out of the ruined ballroom, leaving Clara alone on the marble floor with her federal indictment notice, the heavy oak doors banged open once more. Two tactical officers rushed in, not to make an arrest, but to deliver an urgent message to Director Hayes.

"Sir, we have a breach at the eastern gate," the lead officer panted, clutching his radio. "A black armored SUV just tried to ram the checkpoint. The driver didn't stop."

Hayes cursed under his breath, drawing his sidearm. "Who was in the vehicle?"

"That's the problem, sir," the officer replied, his voice laced with dread. "It wasn't an escape attempt. It was a decoy. The vehicle was completely empty, rigged with an automated steering mechanism and a localized EMP device."

Before Hayes could shout a warning, the overhead lights in the mansion flickered violently once, twice, and then died completely. The grand crystal chandelier went dark, plunging the hallway into an eerie, suffocating twilight illuminated only by the flashing red lights of the police cruisers outside.

Chloe stopped dead in her tracks in the center of the grand foyer. The cell phone in her hand began to vibrate violently, the screen flashing a blinding crimson warning: SYSTEM OVERRIDE DETECTED. REMOTE WIPE IN PROGRESS.
