Chapter 3 - The Ghost of the Boardroom

"Arthur?" Julian whispered, the name escaping his lips like a dying breath.
Arthur Vance—not Julian’s father, but Chloe’s father and the former CEO of Vance Pharmaceuticals—stepped into the harsh light of the ballroom. He looked older than he had three years ago, lines of stress etched deeply into his face, but there was an unmistakable aura of absolute authority about him. He carried no weapon, yet every tactical officer in the room stood a little straighter at his presence.
Clara staggered backward, her emerald green gown brushing against a shattered wine glass. "No. That's impossible. You're dead. The stroke... the hospital records said you were completely incapacitated!"
Arthur offered a cold, humorless smile that didn't reach his eyes. He walked slowly toward Clara, his polished leather shoes clicking rhythmically against the marble floor.
"Medical records can be easily manipulated when you own the clinic, Clara," Arthur said smoothly, his voice carrying effortlessly across the silent room. "Just as a hostile takeover can be orchestrated when you exploit a man's medical vulnerabilities. Isn't that right, Julian?"
Julian opened his mouth, but no words came out. The burgundy velvet tuxedo suddenly felt suffocating. He looked from Arthur to Chloe, the horrific realization dawning on him that he hadn't trapped Chloe in this mansion tonight; he had willingly locked himself inside a cage with his executioners.
"You planned this," Julian finally choked out, his voice trembling with a mixture of rage and terror. "The charity gala, the guest list, the whip... you let me humiliate her so the cameras outside would catch every single second of it."
"Every single second," Arthur confirmed, stopping just inches from Julian. He reached out and casually flicked the black bow tie on Julian's chest. "Public humiliation is a remarkably effective catalyst for legal forfeiture, Julian. Within the last ten minutes, the Securities and Exchange Commission has received every single encrypted ledger of your embezzlement, your insider trading, and your illegal acquisition of Vance Pharmaceuticals."
Chloe stepped forward, her bare back turning slightly toward the light to reveal the jagged, cruel red whip marks left by Julian less than an hour ago. The tactical officers visibly flinched at the sight of the physical abuse, their hands tightening instinctively on their firearms.
"And that," Chloe said quietly, her voice ringing with absolute finality, "is just for the physical scars. We haven't even begun discussing the corporate manslaughter charges."
Clara let out a sharp, breathless gasp. She grabbed the edge of a mahogany dining table to steady herself as the world seemed to tilt violently beneath her feet.
"Manslaughter?" Clara shrieked, the thin veneer of her composure finally cracking entirely. "You can't pin that on us! That was an accident! The clinical trial failure was an unforeseeable statistical anomaly!"

Arthur turned his gaze slowly toward Clara, his eyes narrowing into slits of pure ice.
