Chapter 1 - The Two Hundredth Strike

The crystal chandelier above the ballroom trembled as the crowd completed their macabre tally.
"One hundred ninety-eight! One hundred ninety-nine! Two hundred!"
Julian stood tall in his immaculate burgundy velvet tuxedo, his black bow tie slightly askew from the exertion. He snapped his leather whip through the air once more, the sound cracking like a pistol shot against the marble pillars. Across the room, Chloe stood with her back turned to him, wearing her shimmering silver silk evening gown. Her bare shoulder and back were brutally marked with fresh, angry red welts. In her trembling hand, she clutched a sleek cell phone, her thumb pressing desperately against the screen.
Across the mahogany parquet floor, Clara watched with cold detachment, holding an emerald green satin gown tight against her frame and sipping from a crystal glass of red wine. Suddenly, Clara dropped her glass. It shattered against the floor, spilling deep crimson liquid that miraculously mirrored a sudden, violent stain blooming across the front of her own emerald gown.
Chloe whispered frantically into her phone, her voice a low, shivering tremor of pure desperation.
"Dad… destroy his entire life."
Julian dropped his whip. It hit the marble floor with a heavy, humiliating thud. His face drained of color as panic gripped his chest. He lunged forward, his voice cracking with sudden, hysterical fury.
"Who did you just call? Who is it? Who the hell are you talking to?!"
Julian reached out to snatch the device from her grip, but Chloe spun around, her eyes flashing with a cold, terrifying triumph that froze him in his tracks.
The guests around them began to scatter, shrieking as blinding searchlights pierced the grand stained-glass windows from the courtyard below. Heavy boots thundered against the stone stairs outside. Clara stared down at the phantom blood spreading across her chest, entirely paralyzed by a creeping, incomprehensible terror.
Chloe stepped backward, her pink hair catching the harsh glare of the approaching tactical lights. She didn't flinch as the massive double doors of the ballroom suddenly flew off their hinges, splintering inward with explosive force.
"Freeze! Federal agents! Nobody move!" shouted a voice from the shadows.

Julian spun around, his arrogant facade completely shattering as a dozen armed tactical officers in black gear flooded the room. He raised his hands, his mouth opening to protest, but the lead officer ignored him entirely, marching straight past Julian to stand at attention directly behind Chloe.
