Chapter 12 - The Reckoning in Court

The heavy oak doors of the courtroom swung open, and Julian Vance and Clara Sterling were led in by federal marshals. Julian looked unrecognizable from the arrogant man who had brandished a whip in his ballroom three weeks ago. His hair was unkempt, his posture broken, and the tailored burgundy velvet tuxedo had been replaced by a standard-issue orange detention jumpsuit that hung loosely on his frame.
Clara walked beside him, her head held high out of sheer, desperate pride, though her eyes darted nervously across the crowded gallery. She wore a simple grey jumpsuit, her dark wavy hair tied back without makeup or adornment.
As they were seated at the defense table, Julian turned his head and caught sight of Chloe sitting quietly in the front row of the public gallery. His breath hitched. He tried to mouth something, a silent plea for mercy or forgiveness, but Chloe’s gaze remained like cold granite—unblinking, unfeeling, and completely detached.
Judge Sterling adjusted his glasses, reviewing the thick stack of federal indictments before him. The silence in the courtroom was absolute, broken only by the rhythmic clicking of a court stenographer's machine in the corner.
"This court has reviewed the complete evidentiary record compiled by the Department of Justice, alongside the internal compliance ledgers submitted by Vance Pharmaceuticals," Judge Sterling began, his deep, resonant voice echoing off the high mahogany paneling. "The charges include corporate embezzlement, insider trading, criminal negligence resulting in loss of life, and physical assault under duress."
Julian closed his eyes, leaning forward until his forehead nearly touched the cold wooden table. Clara stared straight ahead, her jaw clenched so tightly her cheeks looked hollow.
"The scale of greed and calculated betrayal exhibited by the defendants represents one of the most egregious abuses of corporate power in this district's history," the Judge continued, his tone hardening with every syllable. "While the primary mastermind, Senator Vance, awaits trial in a federal penitentiary in Washington, those who executed his directives must face the full weight of the law."
He paused, looking directly down at the defense table.
"Julian Vance, for your role in the embezzlement, assault, and systemic destruction of corporate assets, this court sentences you to twenty-five years in federal prison without the possibility of parole."
Julian let out a ragged gasp, his head dropping into his cuffed hands as low, suffocating sobs wracked his body.
"Clara Sterling," the Judge shifted his gaze, "for your central role in the falsification of clinical drug trials, conspiracy, and extortion, this court sentences you to thirty years in federal prison without parole."
Clara slammed her fists onto the table, half-rising from her chair before two federal marshals firmly forced her back down into her seat. "You can't do this!" she shrieked, the thin veneer of her composure finally shattering entirely into hysterical rage. "We built that empire! They stole it from us! This is a kangaroo court!"
Judge Sterling didn't even flinch. He brought his gavel down with a sharp, echoing crack that silenced her instantly.
"Court is adjourned," the Judge said, standing up and sweeping out through the side chambers.
As the marshals hauled Julian and Clara away toward the secure holding cells beneath the courthouse, Chloe remained seated in the gallery. She watched them pass, her face entirely serene.

She stood up slowly, smoothed the front of her blazer, and turned toward the exit. But as she reached the heavy oak doors of the courtroom, her phone buzzed with an urgent priority alert from her father.
