Chapter 14 - The Return to the Estate

The black sedan tore through the wrought-iron gates of the Vance estate, the tires screeching against the wet gravel of the driveway. The heavy front doors of the mansion stood wide open, slamming rhythmically against the stone exterior in the howling coastal wind.

Chloe threw open the car door before it had even come to a complete stop, leaping out into the pouring rain.

"Miss Vance, wait! Let me secure the perimeter!" the driver shouted, unholstering his weapon and stepping out after her.

"Stay by the car and call Director Hayes!" Chloe commanded over the roar of the wind, her voice laced with absolute authority. She didn't wait for his response; she dashed up the grand stone steps and crossed the threshold into the foyer.

The mansion was pitch black. The emergency backup generators had been sabotaged once again, leaving the cavernous hallways illuminated only by the sporadic flashes of lightning breaking through the grand windows.

"Dad!" Chloe called out, her voice echoing hollowly off the marble pillars. "Dad, where are you?!"

There was no answer, only the sound of dripping water and the rhythmic thumping of the front door echoing in the distance.

She drew a deep breath, steadying her nerves. She remembered the layout of the house by heart—every corridor, every hidden alcove, every security blind spot. She moved silently toward the grand staircase, her hand instinctively reaching for the small concealed stun device clipped inside the lining of her trench coat.

As she reached the landing of the second floor, a floorboard creaked softly to her left, near the entrance to her father's private study.

Chloe stopped dead, blending into the heavy shadow of a marble pillar. She held her breath, straining her ears against the storm outside.

A slow, heavy footstep echoed down the hallway. Then another.

A figure stepped out from the darkness of the study corridor. The person wore a dark trench coat, the hood pulled down. In their right hand, dragging slowly across the hardwood floor, was a black leather whip that produced a sickening, scraping sound against the wood.

"You're late, Chloe," a voice spoke from beneath the hood—not synthetic, but cold, familiar, and dripping with venomous triumph.

The hood fell back, revealing a face that made Chloe’s blood run completely cold. It wasn't Julian. It wasn't Clara.

It was Marcus.
