Chapter 8 - Darkness in the Foyer

The sudden blackout transformed the opulent foyer into a claustrophobic cavern of shadows. The only illumination came from the chaotic strobes of the police cruisers slicing through the tall, arched windows, casting jagged, flickering patterns across the marble pillars.

"Stay back!" Director Hayes barked, drawing his firearm and sweeping the dim space with his tactical flashlight. The beam cut through the dust motes, illuminating the terrified faces of the few remaining security guards huddled near the grand staircase.

Chloe stared down at her phone. The screen was no longer displaying her encrypted tracking software; instead, a single flashing line of green text was scrolling across the display at terrifying speed: DECRYPTION INITIATED. 10%... 20%... 30%...

"They didn't just use an EMP," Chloe said, her voice cutting sharply through the tense silence. "The decoy vehicle was a localized signal booster. They're piggybacking off our own telecommunications line to accelerate the remote wipe from the plane."

Arthur stepped close to his daughter, shielding her with his body as he scanned the darkness. "Can you isolate the terminal?"

"If I can get to the main breaker box in the basement before the wipe hits one hundred percent, I can sever the local loop," Chloe replied, her fingers moving frantically as she tried to input a manual override code. But the touch screen was freezing under the aggressive data flood. "The passcode requires a physical biometric signature—my thumbprint from the old lab registry."

Director Hayes stepped up, leveling his flashlight toward the heavy oak doors leading down to the lower level. "I'll clear the path. Arthur, stay with her. Move!"

They sprinted down the grand hallway, their footsteps echoing heavily against the hardwood floors. The air grew noticeably cooler as they descended the stone steps toward the mansion's subterranean archive and utility level. The emergency backup generators hummed faintly in the distance, casting a sickly amber glow over the concrete walls.

Suddenly, a heavy shadow detached itself from the doorway of the utility room ahead.

"Freeze!" Hayes shouted, raising his weapon.

A figure stepped out into the amber light. It wasn't an armed mercenary or a tactical operative. It was a man in a rumpled corporate suit, his tie loosened, holding a heavy wrench in one hand and a smoking laptop in the other. It was Marcus.

Marcus didn't raise his hands. Instead, he offered a weary, desperate smile, looking entirely exhausted as he stared at Chloe and her father.

"Don't bother shooting, Director," Marcus said, his voice echoing hollowly off the concrete. "The upload finished three seconds ago. Senator Vance has the entire database."
