Chapter 11 - The Restoration of Vance Pharmaceuticals

Three weeks later, the boardroom of Vance Pharmaceuticals looked entirely different. Gone were the sleek, intimidating mahogany tables and the cold, minimalist decor chosen by Julian during his brief, disastrous tenure as CEO. In their place stood warm oak surfaces, bright natural light pouring through floor-to-ceiling windows, and a renewed atmosphere of collaboration and ethical research.

Chloe sat at the head of the conference table, wearing a crisp charcoal blazer over a simple silk blouse. Her pink hair was neatly styled, and the physical wounds on her shoulder and back had faded into pale, thin lines—markers of survival rather than ongoing trauma.

Arthur stood by the window, reviewing the morning financial reports while sipping black coffee. The door opened softly, and Marcus stepped into the room, holding a thick stack of reinstated research patents.

"The final regulatory approvals have cleared from the FDA," Marcus announced, a genuine smile touching his face. "The oncology division is fully operational again, and the research grants for the regional clinics have been doubled."

Chloe looked up from her tablet, a small, genuine smile forming on her lips. "Thank you, Marcus. For everything. Rebuilding the infrastructure was the easy part; restoring public trust will take time."

"Trust is earned through consistency, Chloe, not press releases," Arthur said, turning away from the window and walking over to place a hand on the back of her chair. "And you’ve proven your consistency every single day since we reclaimed the board."

The intercom on the conference table chimed softly, and the executive assistant’s voice filtered through the speaker. "Miss Vance, your presence is requested in the federal district courtroom in downtown Portland. The final sentencing hearing for Julian Vance and Clara Sterling is about to commence."

Chloe paused, her pen hovering over the document she was signing. She looked up at her father and then toward Marcus.

"Do you want me to accompany you?" Arthur asked quietly, sensing the weight of the moment.

Chloe shook her head, standing up from her chair and buttoning her blazer with steady, deliberate movements. "No, Dad. I need to face this chapter alone. Some doors have to be closed by the person who unlocked them."

The courtroom in downtown Portland was packed to capacity. Representatives from financial news outlets, federal investigators, and former corporate partners sat in hushed anticipation as the bailiff banged his gavel to signal the entrance of Judge Sterling—an independent jurist with an unblemished record for prosecuting white-collar crime.
