Chapter 4 - A Blueprint for Ruin

The silence that followed Clara’s outburst was deafening. The remaining guests huddled near the terrace doors, too terrified to move and too morbidly fascinated to look away.
"An anomaly, Clara?" Arthur repeated softly, stepping past Julian to close the distance between himself and the trembling woman in the emerald green gown. "When you alter the chemical composition of a life-saving trial drug to cut manufacturing costs by twelve percent, that isn't an anomaly. That is calculated negligence. And when my research lead tried to whistle-blow, you had him silenced."
Clara shook her head violently, dark wavy hair flying across her face. "You have no proof! Everything was signed off under Julian’s corporate seal! I was just a consultant!"
Julian snapped his head toward Clara, his eyes blazing with sudden, venomous betrayal. "You lying witch! You were the one who funneled the capital through the offshore shell companies in the Caymans! You engineered the entire scheme while I was still mourning in the hospital!"
"Enough," Arthur commanded, raising a single hand. The simple gesture carried enough authority to silence them both instantly. He didn't blink as he watched the two former lovers turn on each other like cornered wolves. This was exactly what he and Chloe had designed: a self-executing destruction.
Chloe stood silently beside her father, watching the decay of the empire Julian and Clara had built upon her family's ruin. The cell phone in her hand buzzed continuously with incoming alerts—bank accounts being frozen, board members resigning en masse, and federal warrants being executed across three different states.
"The tactical team has secured the study," one of the officers reported, jogging over from the private hallway. He handed Arthur a heavy, encrypted hard drive wrapped in an anti-static bag. "We found the original physical ledgers hidden in the wall safe, along with the forged medical power of attorney documents."
Arthur took the drive, his expression softening only slightly as he looked down at his daughter. He saw the angry, raised welts on her shoulder and back, the visible evidence of the sadistic game Julian had subjected her to under the guise of an engagement celebration. A muscle feathered in Arthur’s jaw.
"Take them," Arthur said quietly, turning his back on the couple.
Two officers stepped forward, grabbing Julian by his velvet lapels and forcing his arms behind his back. Julian didn't fight; his knees buckled slightly as the velvet fabric tore under the strain.
"You can't do this!" Julian yelled, his voice cracking into a desperate plea as they dragged him toward the double doors. "Chloe! Please! We had history! We were supposed to be married!"
Chloe didn't flinch. She watched him pass, her gaze completely devoid of emotion. "Our history ended the night you watched your guards lock me in the basement, Julian. Enjoy the countdown."
As Julian was hauled out into the flashing red and blue lights of the courtyard, officers moved toward Clara. She backed away until her spine hit the mahogany dining table, her breathing coming in shallow, ragged gasps.
"Don't touch me," Clara whispered, her voice laced with venom. "You think you’ve won? My uncle is the federal district attorney. He’ll have your badges before sunrise."
Arthur stopped walking and turned slowly back toward her. A chilling, knowing smile touched the corners of his mouth.

"Your uncle resigned twenty minutes ago, Clara," Arthur said softly. "His resignation letter was attached to the same hard drive."
