Chapter 6 - The Architect in Geneva

The photograph fluttered down from Arthur’s fingers, landing face-up on the polished mahogany table beside a shattered wine glass. Chloe stared at the image, her breath catching in her throat. The man standing on the Geneva tarmac, wrapped in a heavy cashmere overcoat and holding a sleek leather briefcase, was none other than Senator Vance—Julian’s uncle and the current chairman of the Senate Ethics Committee.
"Your uncle?" Chloe whispered, her voice tight with disbelief. "It was him all along? He was the one funding the hostile takeover?"
Arthur nodded slowly, his expression grim. "Julian was merely the blunt instrument. Clara was the strategist. But Senator Vance provided the political immunity and the shadow capital required to strip our patents and bury the clinical trial data. He thought he was untouchable behind his congressional firewall."
"He's boarding a private flight," Chloe said, her eyes darting back to the clock on the grand mantle. It read 2:14 AM. "If that plane takes off into international airspace, extradition will take years. He'll bury the investigation from abroad."
"Not if we ground the flight first," a cool voice chimed in from the doorway.
Chloe and Arthur turned to see a tall, broad-shouldered man in a tailored dark grey suit stepping out from the shadows of the foyer. He wore no insignia, but the gold-plated secure satellite phone in his hand and the crisp federal clearance badge pinned to his lapel identified him instantly as Director Hayes of the Department of National Intelligence.
"Director Hayes," Arthur acknowledged with a respectful nod. "I trust the FAA clearance went through?"
Hayes offered a sharp, confident smile. "The airspace over Zurich has been restricted due to an unannounced military exercise. Senator Vance’s pilot has been ordered to land his jet at a secure airstrip in Maine for immediate federal inspection."
Clara, still crumpled on the marble floor near the dining table, let out a hysterical, high-pitched laugh. She pushed herself up onto her knees, her emerald green satin gown ruined by wine and dust.
"You think the Senate will let you touch him?" Clara spat, blood streaking her lip where she had bitten it in frustration. "My uncle is untouchable! He has compromising files on half the cabinet! If he goes down, he’s taking the entire administration with him!"
Director Hayes glanced down at Clara with mild amusement, as if observing a troublesome insect. He didn't dignify her outburst with a response. Instead, he looked directly at Chloe.
"Miss Vance, your father shared your digital encrypted archive with my office twenty minutes ago," Hayes said formally. "The data packets you transmitted from your phone during the countdown sequence contained the exact offshore routing numbers connecting the Senator’s campaign PAC to the shell companies that funded Clara’s clinical trial tampering."
Chloe touched the screen of her phone, which was still warm from use. "It was the only way to ensure the firewall couldn't block the subpoena. They automated the transfer every time Julian... every time the floggings reached a milestone."
Hayes's eyes flicked briefly toward Chloe's scarred shoulder beneath the silver silk gown, a flash of genuine anger crossing his professional demeanor. "We have teams securing his Washington estate as we speak. But there's a complication."
Arthur stepped forward, his posture instantly rigid. "What kind of complication?"
"The Senator isn't alone on that jet," Hayes said, lowering his voice. "He's traveling with someone unexpected. Someone who holds the master decryption keys to the entire Vance Pharmaceuticals server network."

Clara stopped laughing. Her face drained of all remaining color as she whispered a single name that made the temperature in the room plummet.
