Chapter 9 - The Descent

The massive hydraulic hatch in the upstairs hallway retracted with a deafening screech of stressed metal, exposing a vertical drop of nearly twenty feet into the pitch-black sub-basement beneath the suburban home. The sudden draft rushing upward carried the damp, metallic scent of concrete and old electrical wiring. Sarah stumbled backward, dragging Lily with her just as the edge of the wooden flooring sheared away and crashed into the darkness below.

“Hold on to me, Lily! Don't look down!” Sarah shouted over the mechanical roar, her voice cracking with terror as she pressed her daughter against the hallway wall.

Downstairs in the living room, the beam of Arthur’s flashlight cut through the gloom, illuminating Mark, who was now pinned firmly beneath the boot of one of the black-suited guards. Despite his compromised position, Mark was laughing hysterically, blood staining his white polo shirt.

“You thought you could just walk in here and take everything?” Mark choked out, coughing between laughs.

“That basement was engineered by federal contractors. There are no cellular signals down there, no way out, and no one is ever going to find you!”

Arthur ignored Mark entirely, turning his attention upward toward his daughter and granddaughter trapped near the abyss. He clicked his flashlight off and on twice—a pre-arranged signal meaning to stay calm and wait for extraction.

“Sarah! Can you reach the emergency ladder housing on the side wall?” Arthur’s deep voice echoed up the stairwell, remarkably calm despite the life-or-death situation.

Sarah craned her neck, searching the dark wall beside Lily’s bedroom door with her bare hands. Her fingers brushed against a recessed metal panel hidden behind the wallpaper. With a desperate heave, she managed to pry the panel open, revealing a coiled steel-cable ladder attached to a heavy automatic winch.

“I found it, Dad!” Sarah called down, her voice trembling violently.

“What do I do with it?”

“Drop the pin and let it unroll, but do not step onto it yet,” Arthur instructed clearly.

“We are coming up.”

Arthur turned back to the guard standing over Mark.

“Secure him to the radiator in the kitchen. Make sure he doesn't move an inch,” Arthur ordered, before turning toward the base of the main staircase with his remaining operative.

Mark’s hysterical laughter suddenly cut short as he was dragged violently across the floor toward the kitchen, his protests muffled by the guard’s heavy hand. Arthur and his remaining specialist moved with tactical precision, scaling the main staircase two steps at a time until they reached the second-floor landing where Sarah and Lily were waiting.

The flashlight beam revealed the terrifying expanse of the open hatch, and directly across the chasm, standing in the doorway of the master bedroom, was a figure holding a heavy steel crowbar that neither Sarah nor Arthur had noticed in the dark.
