Chapter 11 - Freefall in the Dark

The collapse of the hallway floor happened in a terrifying rush of snapping timber and grinding steel. Arthur, Sarah, and Lily scrambled backward off the tilting landing just as the remaining wooden planks gave way, crashing down into the pitch-black sub-basement with a thunderous echo that shook the entire foundation of the house. A thick cloud of dust and pulverized drywall billowed upward into the second-floor corridor, choking the air and plunging the area into near-total obscurity.

“Dad! Are you okay?” Sarah coughed violently, waving her hands to clear the dust as she pulled Lily tightly against her chest behind the reinforced frame of the main staircase.

Arthur emerged from the gray haze, coughing lightly but moving with unwavering resolve. He clicked his flashlight back on, sweeping the brilliant beam across the jagged, broken edge where the hallway floor used to be. The drop was now completely impassable, leaving them cut off from the master bedroom where Evelyn had locked herself away.

“I’m fine, Sarah. Keep Lily down and stay behind me,” Arthur ordered, his voice steady despite the adrenaline pumping through his veins.

Where is your other guard? We need to get out of this house before the structural integrity fails completely.”

Before Sarah could answer, a loud, frantic banging echoed from the ground floor near the kitchen, followed by the muffled voice of the guard who had been left guarding Mark and Victor.

“Mr. Vance! We have an emergency down here! The back exit has been chained from the outside!” the guard shouted through the closed kitchen door.

Arthur cursed under his breath, realizing the trap was far more comprehensive than they had initially calculated. Evelyn hadn't just planned an escape route; she had turned the entire suburban property into an inescapable fortress designed to bury all evidence—and everyone inside it—permanently.

“Can you kick the back door?” Arthur yelled back down the stairwell.

“Negative, sir! It’s reinforced steel with a digital deadbolt tied directly into the house's master grid!” the guard replied, the sound of a heavy shoulder slamming against the metal echoing faintly.

Lily buried her face in Sarah’s jacket, trembling uncontrollably.

“Mommy, I want to go home. I want this to stop,” Lily whimpered, her small body wracked with silent sobs.

Sarah kissed the top of her daughter’s head, tears mixing with the dust on her own bruised cheeks.

“We’re going to be okay, baby. Grandpa is going to get us out of here, I promise,” Sarah whispered, though her own heart was hammering wildly against her ribs.

Arthur turned his attention to the coiled steel-cable ladder he had instructed Sarah to drop earlier. Fortunately, the winch mechanism was mounted on the structural load-bearing wall of the main staircase, which had remained intact during the collapse. Arthur reached out, grabbing the heavy steel cable and testing its tension with all his weight. It held firm, dangling straight down into the darkness of the lower level where the guard was currently trapped.

“Sarah, listen to me,” Arthur said, his tone entirely serious.

“You and Lily are going down this cable first. Our extraction team is waiting in the perimeter yard, but you need to break through the utility basement window to reach them.”

Sarah stared at the dark drop, her eyes wide with fear.

“What about you, Dad? I’m not leaving you up here with Mark and Evelyn!”

Arthur placed a heavy, reassuring hand on his daughter’s shoulder.

“I’m going to finish what I started,” Arthur replied, his eyes flashing with lethal determination.

“Now go. Move!”

As Sarah hooked the harness around Lily and prepared to step off the ledge into the vertical drop, the smart phone in Arthur’s pocket suddenly lit up, displaying a live video feed from an external security camera that was still broadcasting from the front driveway.
