Chapter 13 - The Final Confrontation

The force of the explosion knocked Arthur off balance, sending him crashing hard against the structural wall of the staircase. Dust and insulation rained down from the ceiling like artificial snow, blinding him temporarily as thick, acrid smoke began to fill the corridor. Mark stumbled forward, coughing violently from the smoke, but his grip on the heavy iron fire poker remained locked as he searched through the gray haze for his target.

“Vance! Where are you hiding, you old bastard!” Mark yelled hoarsely, swinging the poker blindly into the darkness.

Arthur wiped the soot from his eyes, blinking rapidly to clear his vision. He crouched low, using the remaining wall structure as cover. His firearm had been knocked from his hand during the blast, skittering across the broken floorboards somewhere into the darkness. He needed to move, but every exit point on the second floor was either blocked by fire or completely destroyed.

Suddenly, a heavy shadow lunged out of the smoke, bringing the iron poker down with lethal force toward Arthur’s head. Arthur reacted with surprising agility for his age, ducking beneath the arc of the swing and driving a powerful, calculated punch directly into Mark’s solar plexus. Mark wheezed sharply, stumbling backward and dropping the poker as the wind was forcefully driven from his lungs.

Arthur pressed his advantage, tackling Mark to the shattered floorboards and pinning the younger man’s arms beneath his knees.

“It’s over, Mark,” Arthur said, his voice cold and resolute as he pressed his forearm against Mark’s throat.

“You lost.”

Mark clawed weakly at Arthur’s sleeve, his face turning pale as he struggled for air.

“Evelyn… she won’t let you win,” Mark choked out, a grotesque smile forming on his bruised lips.

“She has the drive… the federal agents won't reach her in time.”

Downstairs in the utility basement, the heavy metal door finally gave way with a resounding crash as the tactical extraction team breached the interior. Shouts of confirmation echoed up the stairwell as bright tactical flashlights swept the lower levels.

“Vance! Perimeter secure! Where are you?” a gruff voice called up from the landing.

Arthur looked down at Mark, whose eyes were rolling back as consciousness began to slip away from lack of oxygen. The patriarch of the Vance family slowly eased his pressure, standing up and brushing the dust and ash from his immaculate black suit. He left Mark lying motionless on the ruined floorboards, knowing the federal agents would be up the stairs in a matter of seconds to take the abusive husband into federal custody.

Arthur turned toward the shattered exterior wall where the explosion had blown open the master bedroom. Stepping carefully over the burning debris, he looked out into the foggy night just in time to see Evelyn sprinting frantically across the open lawn toward the north tree line, clutching the heavy metal briefcase tightly to her chest.
