Chapter 1 - The Kitchen Breaking Point

The kitchen fluorescent light hummed with a low, agonizing frequency that matched the rising panic in the room. Mark stood towering over Sarah, his fingers clamped tightly around her throat. His knuckles were bone-white against her pale skin, and the veins in his temples throbbed violently. Sarah’s hands clawed weakly at his forearms, her breath catching in her windpipe as she fought desperately for oxygen. Her face was already mapped with dark, fading bruises and fresh cuts from an earlier altercation, a grim testament to the escalating violence that had poisoned their suburban household for months.

Mark shook her roughly, his face twisted in a mask of paranoid fury.

“You’re lying to me!” Mark screamed, his voice cracking with unbridled rage.

“I see the way you look at your phone. I know you’re talking to them behind my back.”

Sarah choked out her response, her voice barely a raspy whisper.

“I swear to God, Mark, I was only talking to my mother. Please, just let me go.”

Just a few feet away, sitting frozen before a half-eaten dinner plate, their young daughter Lily covered her face with trembling hands. Tears streamed through her small fingers as the terrifying sounds of her parents tearing their family apart echoed off the tile floor. The weight of the moment crushed the eight-year-old’s spirit until she could bear it no longer. She leaped from her chair, her chair scraping loudly against the linoleum.

“Stop hurting Mommy!” Lily cried out, sobbing uncontrollably.

Without looking back, Lily sprinted in a blind panic toward the hallway stairs, her small sneakers pounding frantically against the wooden steps. Mark barely glanced her way, his attention entirely consumed by his victim. But as the upstairs bedroom door slammed shut, Mark’s phone began to vibrate violently on the kitchen counter, flashing an incoming call from a restricted number that made his blood run instantly cold.
