Chapter 5 - The Hidden Ledger

The weight of Arthur’s words hung heavily in the tense atmosphere of the living room. Mark stopped struggling against the two men holding him down, his body going completely rigid as the full implications of the confession washed over him. He had spent years carefully orchestrating his fake identity, believing he had outsmarted everyone from his past. Yet, here was Arthur Vance—a man whose influence extended far beyond what Mark had ever dared to imagine—dismantling his entire life with effortless calm.
“That’s… that’s impossible,” Mark choked out, his forehead pressed directly against the cold wooden floorboards.
“The bank records were sealed. I paid off the auditor.”
Arthur stood back up, adjusting the cuffs of his pristine black suit jacket with meticulous care. He motioned for one of the guards to loosen their grip slightly so Mark could lift his head, though the threat of force remained entirely present.
“You paid off a corrupt mid-level clerk, Mark,” Arthur corrected, his tone conversational yet chillingly precise.
“My family built our fortune by hunting down corporate parasites who think they can hide behind shell companies. Did you really think my daughter’s disappearance five years ago wouldn’t trigger a permanent investigation?”
Sarah pushed herself up into a sitting position, her bruised face illuminated by the flickering light of the hallway lamp.
“He told me he would kill Lily if I ever reached out to you, Dad,” Sarah sobbed softly, the tears finally breaking through her stoic defense.
“Every threat… every bruise… it was all to keep me isolated from everyone who loved me.”
Arthur’s eyes flickered toward his daughter, a brief flash of genuine paternal anguish softening his hardened features before his stoic mask returned. He looked back down at Mark, whose face had gone pale as chalk. The reality that his abusive reign had reached its absolute end was finally sinking into his paranoid mind.
“You weaponized my granddaughter’s safety against her own mother,” Arthur said, his voice dropping an octave, carrying a lethal promise.
“And for that, prison will feel like a five-star vacation compared to what I have planned for your financial ruin.”
Mark let out a desperate, mocking laugh, trying to salvage his shattered ego.
“You can’t touch my assets! Everything is under my corporate name!”
Arthur slowly pulled out his own blue smartphone, unlocked the screen with a single tap, and turned it around so Mark could see the glowing display.
“Corporate dissolution was filed twenty minutes before we walked through your front door,” Arthur replied smoothly.
“As of right now, you don’t even own the shirt on your back.”

Before Mark could process the utter destruction of his livelihood, a loud, urgent knock echoed from the back patio door, followed by the sound of glass shattering in the kitchen.
