Chapter 6 - The Uninvited Guest

The sharp sound of breaking glass from the kitchen pierced the tense silence of the living room, causing the two guards to instantly draw their sidearms with practiced precision. Mark jerked his head toward the dark hallway leading to the back of the house, a flicker of bewildered hope crossing his terrified features. He hadn’t expected anyone else tonight. The front door breach had been terrifying enough, but a secondary intrusion meant his carefully constructed web of secrets involved players he hadn't even accounted for.
“Who’s that?” Mark muttered, his voice trembling as he looked up at Arthur.
“Did you bring the police after all?”
Arthur didn’t answer immediately. He signaled silently to one of the suited guards, who melted into the shadows of the hallway without making a sound, weapon raised and ready for close-quarters combat. Arthur turned his attention back to Sarah, stepping over to her and offering a steady hand to help her up from the floor. Sarah took his hand gratefully, wincing as her sore muscles protested the movement. She leaned heavily against her father, her eyes wide with fresh terror.
“Dad, we need to get Lily out of here,” Sarah whispered urgently, clutching her bruised arm.
“There are things you don't know about Mark's business partners. People far worse than him.”
Arthur kept his gaze locked on the dark hallway.
“Nobody is touching my family tonight,” Arthur replied firmly.
“Let them come.”
A muffled scuffle echoed from the kitchen—a sharp thud, the dull thud of a body hitting the tile, and the unmistakable sound of a heavy metal briefcase dropping to the floor. A moment later, the guard stepped back into the living room, dragging a shivering, middle-aged man in a cheap polyester suit by the collar. The man’s glasses were crooked, and his nose was bleeding profusely onto his white dress shirt. Mark’s eyes went wide with absolute horror as he recognized the intruder.
“Victor?” Mark gasped out, struggling against the remaining guard.
“What are you doing here? You were supposed to stay out of state!”
Victor wiped the blood from his upper lip with the back of his trembling hand, glaring furiously at Mark.
“Stay out of state? With your money gone, I lost everything, Mark!” Victor screamed, hysteria cracking his voice.
“You said the offshore accounts were untouchable! Now your father-in-law’s goons have wiped out our entire operation!”
Arthur stepped between the two panicked associates, his expression like carved granite. He looked down at Victor with utter disdain, recognizing the face from the financial dossiers his investigators had compiled over the past six months.
“You must be Victor Vance’s namesake no longer,” Arthur murmured coldly, referencing the stolen identity Victor and Mark had used to embezzle millions from the Vance Corporation.
“Embezzlement, extortion, and interstate fraud. Quite a busy portfolio for two small-time cowards.”
Victor swallowed hard, his eyes darting toward the front door where the shattered frame offered a clear escape route.
“Listen to me, Mr. Vance,” Victor pleaded, his voice dropping to a desperate whine.
“Mark was the mastermind! I was just his accountant! He forced me to sign those documents under threat of violence, just like he did to Sarah!”
Mark thrashed wildly in the guard's grip, his face purple with fury at the betrayal.
“You lying piece of trash!” Mark roared, lunging forward with a sudden burst of adrenaline.
“You suggested the offshore transfers from day one!”

Before the argument could escalate further, the upstairs landing creaked loudly, and a small shadow appeared at the top of the stairs, holding a blue smartphone with the flashlight beam cutting through the darkness.
