Chapter 12 - The Perimeter Breach

The glowing screen of Arthur’s smartphone illuminated his hardened facial features in the dim, dusty gloom of the second-floor landing. On the small display, the live feed from the front driveway showed a chaotic scene unfolding outside the shattered front doors of the house. Two unmarked black SUVs had rammed through the suburban perimeter fence, their high-beam headlights cutting blinding swaths through the foggy night air. Several tactical operatives in full gear were rapidly deploying from the vehicles, securing the perimeter and neutralizing an armed lookout who had been hiding in the bushes near the mailbox.

“They’re outside,” Arthur muttered, a grim sense of satisfaction touching his lips.

“The extraction team has breached the outer perimeter.”

Sarah paused, one foot hovering over the edge of the steel-cable drop, clutching Lily tightly in her arms.

“Then we can all get out of here together, Dad! Forget about Evelyn and Mark. Let the federal agents handle them,” Sarah pleaded, looking desperately into her father’s unyielding eyes.

Arthur shook his head slowly, locking his gaze onto the glowing screen of his phone where a secondary camera feed showed Evelyn exiting through a hidden bulkhead door on the side of the house, carrying a heavy metal briefcase containing the master drive of the embezzled corporate accounts.

“Evelyn is heading for the north tree line with the financial records,” Arthur stated firmly.

“If she crosses that property line and reaches the highway, every offshore account we traced will vanish into untraceable cryptocurrency protocols within seconds. Years of evidence will be gone forever.”

Before Sarah could argue further, a loud crash echoed from the kitchen below, followed by the sound of shouting and the unmistakable crack of a suppressed firearm. The guard stationed downstairs cried out in pain, and heavy footsteps began pounding up the main staircase toward their position.

“Go! Now!” Arthur commanded, pushing Sarah and the harness system over the edge of the landing.

Sarah let out a sharp gasp as the winch automatically engaged, lowering her and Lily rapidly down the steel cable into the relative safety of the utility basement below.

Arthur spun around, drawing his own concealed firearm from his shoulder holster just as Mark appeared at the top of the stairwell. Mark’s white polo shirt was smeared with dirt and blood, and his eyes were wide with a manic, desperate frenzy. In his hand, he clutched a heavy iron fire poker he had grabbed from the living room hearth.

“You ruined everything, old man!” Mark screamed, charging forward like a wounded animal.

“If I’m going down, I’m taking you with me!”

Arthur didn't panic. He raised his weapon with absolute calm, tracking Mark’s erratic movements in the narrow corridor. But before Arthur could pull the trigger, a sudden explosion rocked the side of the house, blowing out the master bedroom wall and sending a wave of superheated air and debris crashing down the hallway.
