Chapter 8 - The Power Outage

The sudden electronic whine from the security camera ceiling mount died away into absolute, unnatural silence. Before anyone could react, every light in the suburban house flickered violently once, twice, and then extinguished completely, plunging the living room, kitchen, and stairwell into pitch blackness. The ambient glow of the streetlights outside was the only illumination managing to bleed through the shattered front doorframe, casting long, eerie shadows across the floors.

“What’s happening?” Sarah gasped, instinctively tightening her grip around Lily at the top of the stairs.

“Did the power grid blow?”

Mark let out a harsh, desperate laugh from the floor in the dark.

“You think you won?” Mark wheezed, his voice dripping with sudden, unhinged triumph.

“That wasn't a power surge. That’s the backup protocol.”

Arthur didn't panic. He instantly drew a compact flashlight from his suit jacket, clicking it on to cast a sharp, brilliant beam across the room. The beam illuminated the two guards, who immediately formed a protective perimeter around Arthur, their weapons raised and scanning the darkened corners of the foyer. Victor began to chuckle nervously against his zip-ties, his earlier terror temporarily masked by a strange wave of nervous relief.

“You trapped us in here with him,” Victor muttered to the floor.

“You have no idea who Mark was really working for.”

Arthur’s eyes narrowed as he swung the flashlight beam toward Mark, who was slowly pushing himself up from the floor, clutching his bruised ribs with one hand while reaching into his back pocket with the other.

“Stop right there,” Arthur commanded, stepping forward.

“Move your hand and you lose it.”

Mark ignored the warning, a manic grin spreading across his face in the flashlight beam. With a sudden, forceful motion, he pulled a small, heavy black remote control from his pocket and pressed the large central button before Arthur’s guard could tackle him to the ground.

“It’s over, old man,” Mark spat out blood as he spoke.

“The safe room seals automatically when power cuts. And guess who’s currently standing right on top of the primary hydraulic hatch?”

Sarah froze at the top of the stairs as she heard a deep, mechanical grinding sound vibrating upward through the wooden floorboards beneath her feet. The section of the hallway floor directly outside Lily’s bedroom door gave a loud, metallic clank, and then the wood paneling suddenly dropped three inches, revealing a hidden seam that outlined a massive square trapdoor.

“Mommy! The floor is moving!” Lily screamed in sheer terror, clinging desperately to her mother’s waist.

Before Sarah could drag her daughter away, the hydraulic mechanism hissed violently, and the floor beneath them began to slide sideways into the walls, opening a terrifying, pitch-black chasm that dropped straight down into the pitch-black basement below.
