Chapter 10 - The Mastermind Revealed

The figure standing in the doorway of the master bedroom stepped slowly into the pale beam of Arthur’s flashlight. It was a woman in her late thirties, wearing an impeccably tailored gray business suit that contrasted sharply with the chaotic violence of the house. Her blonde hair was pulled back into a severe bun, and a cold, calculating smile played across her lips. It was Evelyn Vance—Arthur’s eldest daughter, and Sarah’s estranged older sister—whom everyone had believed was currently residing in Europe on corporate business.

Sarah gasped, her hand flying to her bruised mouth in sheer disbelief.

“Evelyn? What are you doing here? You were supposed to be in London!” Sarah cried out, stepping protectively in front of Lily.

Evelyn chuckled softly, resting the heavy steel crowbar casually against her shoulder like a walking cane.

“London was just a convenient cover story, little sister,” Evelyn replied, her voice dripping with venomous condescension.

“Someone had to manage Mark’s incompetence from the shadows. Do you really think a small-time grifter like him could orchestrate a multi-million-dollar corporate siphon without professional guidance?”

Arthur stepped in front of Sarah and Lily, his flashlight beam locked directly onto his eldest daughter’s face. There was no surprise in Arthur’s eyes—only a cold, simmering fury that had been building for years.

“I suspected as much, Evelyn,” Arthur said steadily, his voice dangerously low.

“You always were the ambitious one. Too bad your greed completely clouded your judgment.”

Evelyn’s smile vanished, replaced by a mask of bitter resentment as she glared at her father.

“My greed? You built this entire empire on stolen patents and ruined lives, Father! I merely adapted to your corrupted playbook,” Evelyn hissed, stepping closer to the edge of the open hydraulic hatch.

“And now, you and your little rescue mission have walked right into the final chapter of your own corporate legacy.”

With a swift, calculated motion, Evelyn raised the heavy crowbar and jammed it into the control box mounted on the wall beside the master bedroom door. A loud spark hissed through the air, followed by the grinding whine of the hydraulic system reversing direction. The open chasm beneath the hallway began to widen rapidly, shearing away the remaining floorboards toward the staircase landing where Arthur and Sarah stood.

“Dad, the floor is collapsing!” Sarah screamed, grabbing her father’s arm as the wood beneath their feet began to tilt dangerously toward the abyss.

Arthur didn't hesitate. He grabbed Sarah and Lily, shoving them backward toward the safety of the main stairwell, while he planted his feet firmly against the tilting floorboards to face his traitorous daughter across the widening gap.

“You won't get away with this, Evelyn,” Arthur shouted over the deafening mechanical roar.

“The federal authorities are already surrounding the property.”

Evelyn laughed maniacally, pressing a secondary detonator concealed in her palm.

“Let them try to arrest a ghost,” she mocked, before stepping backward into the master bedroom and slamming the heavy oak door shut just as the entire hallway floor gave way and plunged into the darkness below.
