Chapter 14 - The Tree Line Chase

The cold autumn wind whipped through the shattered master bedroom wall, carrying the sharp scent of burning timber and damp earth. Arthur squinted through the gloom, watching Evelyn’s silhouette vanish into the dense shadows of the north tree line. Without a second thought, he clambered over the smoldering drywall debris, leaping down onto the sloping roof of the front porch before dropping heavily onto the soft grass of the front lawn below.

The tactical extraction team was already swarming the property, securing the area and placing a handcuffed Victor into the back of an armored transport vehicle. One of the lead operatives jogged over toward Arthur, shining a tactical flashlight onto the older man’s face.

“Mr. Vance! Are you injured? We need to get you to medical immediately,” the operative shouted over the idling engine noise of the SUVs.

Arthur brushed past the operative without slowing his pace, pointing toward the dark boundary of the woods.

“My daughter Evelyn is heading into the north tree line with the primary financial drive. Do not let her cross the highway ridge or years of evidence are gone,” Arthur commanded sharply.

“Secure the perimeter around the woods immediately!”

The operative nodded crisply, barking orders into his shoulder radio as three tactical specialists broke away from the main group, sprinting in a wide flanking maneuver to cut off Evelyn’s escape route through the dense forest.

Arthur pushed his own aging body forward, following the faint sounds of snapping twigs and heavy breathing echoing through the dark woods. The canopy overhead blocked out most of the moonlight, turning the forest floor into an intricate maze of twisted roots and low-hanging branches. Every breath burned in Arthur’s chest, but the sheer fury driving him forward refused to let him stop. He knew every inch of this property; these woods backed up against the old Vance family estate where his daughters had grown up before ambition and greed had poisoned their bloodlines.

Ahead of him, the beam of a tactical flashlight cut through the trees, sweeping frantically from side to side.

“Evelyn! Stop running! There’s nowhere left to go,” Arthur’s voice boomed through the quiet forest, echoing off the ancient trunks.

A sudden, sharp glare of light flashed from behind a thick cluster of pine trees, followed by the metallic click of a firearm being unholstered. Evelyn stepped out from the shadows, her gray business suit torn and stained with mud, her blonde hair hanging loose around her frantic face. In one hand she held the heavy metal briefcase, and in the other, she pointed a small, black semi-automatic pistol directly at her father’s chest.

“Stay back, Father! I mean it!” Evelyn screamed, her voice cracking with unhinged desperation.

“You ruined my life, you controlled every aspect of my career, and I am not going to spend the rest of my days in a federal cage because of your moral crusades!”

Arthur stopped in his tracks, standing tall in the center of the muddy path, completely unfazed by the barrel of the gun pointed inches from his heart.

“You ruined your own life the moment you decided to prey on your own family, Evelyn,” Arthur replied calmly, taking one deliberate step closer.

“Put the gun down. The woods are surrounded.”

Evelyn’s finger tightened around the trigger, her eyes wild with terror and defiance.

“I’d rather burn it all to the ground,” she hissed, pulling the trigger just as a tactical spotlight from the tree line suddenly blinded them both.
