Chapter 4 - Shadows of the Past

The silence that followed the splintering of the front door felt suffocating. Mark’s eyes darted frantically between Arthur and the two armed men flanking the elderly patriarch in the dim living room. The illusion of control Mark had maintained over his family for five long years was evaporating in real-time. He swallowed hard, trying to summon the arrogant defiance that usually cowed Sarah into submission, but his throat felt entirely dry.

“You have no right to break into my home,” Mark muttered, his voice lacking any genuine conviction.

“I’m calling the police right now.”

Arthur didn't blink. He slowly reached into the inner pocket of his black suit jacket, retrieving a heavy manila folder that looked remarkably worn at the edges. He didn’t open it; instead, he tapped it lightly against his palm, the sound rhythmically punctuating the heavy breathing of the terrified man standing before him.

“The police?” Arthur repeated, a cold, humorless smile touching the corners of his mouth.

“Mark, do you really want to invite men who wear badges into a house built entirely on forged signatures and hidden bank statements?”

Sarah shifted weakly on the floor, pressing her back against the baseboard radiator.

“Mark… he knows,” she whispered, her voice laced with exhaustion and fear.

“He’s known from the very beginning.”

Mark snapped his head down toward his wife, his anger flaring up once more despite the looming threat of the men in suits.

“Shut your mouth!” Mark yelled, lunging forward as if to strike her again.

Before Mark could take a single step, the two suited men moved with terrifying speed. In a blur of motion, they pinned Mark’s arms behind his back and forced him to his knees on the very hardwood where Sarah lay. Mark grunted in pain, his face pressing against the polished wood as the breath was driven from his lungs. He struggled violently, but the men held him with ironclad precision, neutralizing his physical dominance in less than three seconds.

Arthur stepped closer, looking down at his son-in-law with an expression of profound disappointment.

“You always were a violent coward, Mark,” Arthur said evenly.

“You thought changing your last name and moving across state lines would erase your criminal record. But you made one critical mistake.”

Mark strained against the grip of the guards, his face turning red with fury.

“What are you talking about? Let me up!” Mark screamed.

Arthur knelt slowly, bringing his face inches from Mark’s ear, whispering words that made the younger man freeze instantly.
