Chapter 9 - The Downtown Alley

The heavy steel cable jerked Adrian backward with brutal force, tearing him away from the manhole opening. He slammed hard against the slick concrete floor of the drainage junction, the wind completely knocked out of his lungs.

Above him, through the circular gap of the open manhole, the bright neon lights of the city blurred against the night sky, accompanied by the faint, distant wail of a police siren.

"Pull him back!" Marcus’s voice roared from the shadows of the lower tunnel.

Two masked security guards hauled Adrian roughly to his feet, shoving him against the damp brick wall. Marcus stepped forward into the dim light of a flickering overhead utility bulb, his face bruised from Elena’s wrench strike, his expression twisted into a mask of cold triumph. He tossed the thermal lance aside and walked slowly toward Adrian.

"You really thought you could just walk away with the keys to the kingdom?" Marcus mocked, wiping a smear of blood from his split lip. "Dad always favored you, Adrian. He gave you the title, the corner office, the pristine public image. But he built this empire in the dark—and the dark belongs to me."

"You're insane, Marcus," Adrian gasped, struggling against the grip of the guards. "The police are already on their way. Elena made it to the street."

Marcus chuckled darkly, pulling a sleek, encrypted satellite phone from his pocket. He tapped the screen twice. "Let them come. By the time the authorities sort through the shell corporations and off-shore accounts, the Vance Corporation will have legally absorbed every asset you own. Your bank accounts are frozen. Your corporate credentials have been revoked. As of ten minutes ago, legally speaking, you don't exist."

Before Adrian could answer, the sound of screeching tires echoed from the street above. Heavy footsteps pounded against the pavement around the open manhole, followed by a sharp, authoritative voice echoing down the shaft.

"Police! Stay where you are!"

Marcus’s expression hardened instantly. He nodded to the guards, who slammed a heavy steel grate over the manhole opening from the inside, cutting off the police lights and plunging the tunnel back into semi-darkness.

"Lock down the lower sector," Marcus ordered, turning away into the deeper recesses of the underground complex. "Leave him in the holding cell. When the corporate transfer is finalized at dawn, we'll decide what to do with our ghost brother."

The guards shoved Adrian violently into a small, reinforced security holding cell set into the brickwork, slamming the heavy iron door shut. The deadbolt clicked into place with a chilling finality.

Adrian sank slowly to the concrete floor of the cell, his mind racing. He was locked away beneath the city, stripped of his identity and his resources. But as he reached into his breast pocket, his fingers brushed against something hard and metallic that he had slipped past Marcus during the scuffle—the original silver flash drive Lily had pulled from the floor vent.

And hidden inside its secondary partition was something Marcus didn't know existed: a full recording of their father’s final, dying confession.
