Chapter 12 - The Final Confrontation

Adrian, Sterling, and Elena slipped quietly through the charred remains of the server room, hugging the shadows of the massive, smoke-stained monitors. Above them, the grand library’s sliding steel walls remained parted, revealing the opulent mahogany shelves bathed in the harsh, flickering light of the estate's emergency generators.

Marcus and Clara stood by the central console, their faces slick with sweat, staring frantically at a flashing red progress bar on the master terminal.

"Transfer at ninety-eight percent," Clara muttered, her fingers flying across the keyboard with desperate speed. "Come on, authorize! Authorize!"

"It won't go through without the primary encryption key from Adrian's physical terminal," Marcus cursed, slamming his fist against the desk.

"You're looking for this?" Adrian’s voice cut through the cavernous room like a physical blow.

Marcus and Clara whirled around in unison. Adrian stepped out from the shadows of the server racks, holding the silver flash drive up between two fingers so the blue light caught the metallic casing. Sterling and Elena flanked him, their expressions carved from stone.

Clara’s face drained of all color, her breath hitching in her throat. Marcus, however, recovered quickly, a sneering, arrogant grin spreading across his bruised face as he reached slowly behind his back toward his jacket holster.

"You just don't know when to stay down, do you, big brother?" Marcus hissed, drawing a sleek black pistol from his coat and leveling it directly at Adrian's chest. "Hand over the drive. Right now. Or I swear to God, I'll put a bullet through your heart and let your precious little housekeeper join you in the dirt."

Before Marcus could pull the trigger, the heavy double doors of the grand library—the ones that had been locked from the outside hours ago—swung wide open with a resounding crash.

Detective Miller stood in the doorway, backed by a dozen heavily armed federal agents in tactical gear, their assault rifles raised and aimed squarely at Marcus and Clara.

"Drop the weapon, Mr. Vance!" Miller’s voice boomed through the library, echoing off the marble floors and ancient bookshelves. "You're surrounded. Federal warrants have been issued for fraud, corporate embezzlement, and the wrongful death of Arthur Vance."

Marcus froze, the pistol trembling in his hand. He looked from the federal agents to Adrian, then back to Clara, whose knees finally gave out beneath her long burgundy dress, sending her crashing hard onto the marble floor in a crumpled, defeated heap.
