Chapter 1 - The Spilled Water

The marble floor of the grand library gleamed under the antique chandelier, reflecting a cold, unforgiving light. Water from the spilled bucket pooled around the small yellow cleaning gloves, soaking into the hem of the pink dress and grey pinafore apron. Three-year-old Lily stood frozen, her chest heaving as silent, heavy tears spilled over her flushed cheeks. The white bows in her pigtails were slightly crooked from the frantic scrubbing she had been forced to do.

"Please..." Lily whispered, her voice trembling with a child’s pure terror.

Clara Vance stood above her, a towering figure in a long burgundy dress that seemed to drink the light. Her posture was rigid, her face locked in a mask of absolute disdain.

"You are clumsy, just like your mother," Clara said, her voice cutting through the silent room like a razor. "This entire estate does not harbor incompetence."

Lily looked up, her eyes wide, glassy, and filled with a desperate plea that no child should ever have to muster.

"Please, don't fire my mommy," Lily sobbed, her small hands clutching at the wet fabric of her apron.

Clara did not flinch. She raised a single, perfectly manicured finger, pointing directly toward the towering mahogany entrance.

"Get out. Now," Clara commanded, her tone devoid of any maternal instinct or human warmth.

Before Lily could move, the heavy double doors swung open with a slow, ominous creak. Adrian Vance strode into the library, his tall frame clad in a dark, expensive suit. His eyes darted from the crying toddler to the stern woman standing by the desk.

"What happened?" Adrian asked, his voice sharp and demanding answers.

Lily did not hesitate. She scrambled across the wet marble, burying her face into her father's dark trousers, her tiny frame shaking with sobs. She pointed a trembling yellow-gloved finger directly toward the ornate brass floor vent near the baseboard.

Clara’s face lost its color instantly. She took a sharp step forward, her composure cracking for the first time.

"Adrian, don't!" Clara yelled, lunging toward the vent with a look of sheer panic that sent a cold shiver down Adrian's spine.
