Chapter 7 - The Drainage Tunnels

The heavy iron hatch slammed shut with a finality that vibrated through the damp, concrete walls of the drainage tunnel. Total darkness enveloped them, broken only by the weak, flickering beam of a small flashlight Elena pulled from her pocket. The air was thick with the smell of mold, rust, and rushing water.
Adrian set Lily down gently. The toddler immediately buried her face in Elena’s stained apron, sobbing quietly as her mother scooped her up, pressing desperate kisses into her soot-covered pigtails.
"Are you hurt, my sweet girl?" Elena whispered, her voice shaking violently as she checked Lily over for injuries.
"I'm okay, Mommy," Lily whimpered, clutching her yellow cleaning glove like a security blanket. "The bad man is sleeping."
Adrian wiped a streak of sweat and ash from his forehead, shining his own phone light down the seemingly endless brick corridor. The water beneath their boots was ankle-deep and moving fast.
"How did you get back in here, Elena?" Adrian asked, his voice echoing off the curved ceiling. "Clara had the main gates locked. Security was doubled."
"I never left," Elena replied, shifting Lily to her other hip while gripping the heavy wrench defensively. "When Clara ordered me off the property, I hid in the gardener's shed. I knew something was wrong when I saw Marcus’s car arrive this morning. He didn't die in Marseille, Mr. Vance. I cleaned his private suite last week. He's been living in the estate's east wing under an alias, orchestrating the hostile takeover of the corporation right under your nose."
Adrian clenched his fists. The betrayal ran deeper than he had ever imagined. His own brother had used him as a puppet while systematically dismantling everything their father had built.
"We need to get out of these tunnels," Adrian said, scanning the junction ahead where three different pipes converged. "Where does this drainage system lead?"
"It leads straight down to the old municipal pumping station by the river," Elena said, shining her flashlight toward a rusted iron ladder bolted to the wall. "From there, we can reach the main road and get to a police station."
Suddenly, a loud metallic screech echoed from behind the iron hatch they had just escaped through. The sound of high-powered cutting torches whining against the heavy steel bolts reverberated through the brickwork. Clara and Marcus’s recovery team was already trying to burn their way through the door.
"They're coming," Adrian said grimly.
He grabbed the rungs of the iron ladder, testing its stability against the damp wall. It wobbled slightly, rusted through at the base, but it was their only way out. He motioned for Elena and Lily to go first.

As Elena began to climb, a deafening explosion ripped through the tunnel behind them, blowing the iron hatch off its hinges and sending a wall of superheated steam and fire rushing directly toward their position.
