Chapter 3 - The Locked Library

The heavy click of the deadbolt echoing through the cavernous library made Adrian whirl around toward the mahogany double doors. He gripped the brass handle and pulled, but it refused to budge. Someone had locked them from the outside, trapping them in the suffocating silence of the room.
"Open this door!" Adrian shouted, slamming his fist against the solid wood.
Clara stood motionless by the mahogany desk, her breathing shallow, her eyes fixed on the silver flash drive clutched in Adrian’s hand. The cold, controlling demeanor she had worn moments before had completely fractured, replaced by a desperate, trapped-animal panic.
"It’s useless," Clara said, her voice devoid of its previous authority. "The security protocols of this estate override even your master key once a internal breach is flagged. You shouldn't have opened that vent, Adrian. You have no idea what forces you are meddling with."
Adrian ignored her, pulling out his smartphone. The screen displayed a blank, red-tinted interface with a single blinking warning: Signal Blocked. Every communication line in the western wing had been systematically severed. He looked down at Lily, who had curled into a small ball against the base of a bookshelf, whimpering softly while clutching her remaining yellow glove. The sight of his innocent daughter trapped in this corporate warzone filled Adrian with a cold, blinding rage.
"You planted that drive there, Clara," Adrian accused, stepping toward her with deliberate, menacing slowness. "And you forced a three-year-old child to retrieve it because your hands were too clean to dirty. What else have you stolen from my family?"
Clara backed away until her spine pressed against the edge of the mahogany desk. She let out a sharp, humorless laugh that sounded more like a gasp.
"Stolen?" she retorted, her chin lifting defiantly despite her trembling hands. "I didn't steal a damn thing, Adrian. I merely preserved what your father was too weak to destroy. That flash drive contains proof that the entire Vance empire was built on a foundation of ruin. If you plug that into a terminal, you aren't just destroying my reputation—you are burning your own inheritance to ash."
Before Adrian could demand answers, a low, mechanical grinding sound echoed from beneath the floorboards. The brass vent he had just unscrewed began to vibrate violently. A thick, sweet-smelling white vapor started hissing out of the dark opening, hugging the marble floor and curling rapidly toward where little Lily was sitting.
"Gas!" Clara screamed, abandoning her composure entirely as she scrambled onto the top of the desk.

Adrian dropped the flash drive, lunged across the room, and scooped Lily into his arms just as the fog reached them. But as he turned back toward Clara, the heavy library walls began to slide outward with a deafening screech, revealing a hidden control room he never knew existed.
