Chapter 2 - The Floor Vent Secret

Adrian caught Clara’s wrist mid-motion, his grip iron-tight as he stared down at the trembling woman in the burgundy dress. The library fell into an eerie, suffocating silence, broken only by Lily’s ragged breathing against his leg.
"What is down there, Clara?" Adrian asked, his voice dropping into a dangerous, low register that brooked no argument.
"Nothing that concerns you or this... peasant child," Clara snapped, aggressively pulling her arm away. She smoothed the front of her long burgundy dress with shaking fingers, though her eyes darted nervously toward the brass grille of the floor vent. "The maintenance crew hasn't cleared the lower ventilation shafts in months. It's dusty, pest-infested, and entirely irrelevant to our family estate's daily operations."
Adrian looked down at Lily, who was frantically shaking her head beneath her white-bowed pigtails. The toddler reached out, patting his leg with her oversized yellow cleaning glove, desperate to make him understand what her three-year-old vocabulary could not articulate.
"Mommy... dropped the shiny book," Lily whimpered, her voice cracking as fresh tears welled in her eyes. "In the dark hole."
Adrian’s expression hardened. He knew every blueprint of this historical mansion by heart. The ventilation shaft beneath the grand library did not lead to the basement maintenance tunnels. It connected directly to the private, off-limits sub-vault where his late father’s confidential corporate archives were kept—archives that Clara legally had no access to without a board consensus.
"Clara," Adrian said slowly, stepping away from her and kneeling beside his daughter. He gently removed one of the oversized yellow gloves from Lily’s small hand. "Did you tell her to clean down there?"
"Of course not!" Clara hissed, her voice rising an octave, betraying her frantic inner state. "The girl wandered off while her mother was scrubbing the west wing. It is sheer negligence. They should both be thrown out onto the street immediately."
Adrian ignored her. He gripped the edge of the brass floor vent. With a firm twist, the screws gave way, revealing a dark, cavernous drop illuminated only by a sliver of natural light from the high library windows. Reaching inside, Adrian’s fingers brushed against something cold and metallic resting on the ledge just beneath the opening. He pulled it out, holding it up for Clara to see.
It was a heavy, silver-encased flash drive, engraved with the private crest of the Vance Corporation—the exact drive Adrian had spent the last three years searching for after his father’s suspicious death.

"Explain this," Adrian whispered, his eyes locking onto Clara with a terrifying intensity as the heavy library doors suddenly clicked shut from the outside, locking them inside.
