Chapter 10 - The Dying Confession

The dim emergency light of the holding cell cast long, erratic shadows across the concrete walls. Adrian plugged the silver flash drive into the small, tactical diagnostic pad he always carried in his suit lining—a device completely isolated from the estate's main network.

The screen flickered to life, illuminating his tired, soot-stained face. A single audio-visual file appeared at the top of the directory: VANCE_FINAL_TESTAMENT_2020.enc.

Adrian held his breath and tapped the file.

The screen flickered, and the tired, frail face of Arthur Vance—their father—appeared on the small display. The recording was timestamped just three days before his mysterious passing.

"If you are watching this, Adrian," the old man’s voice rasped through the small speaker, weak but unmistakably sharp, "then Marcus has finally made his move. I tried to warn you, son. The empire we built was never legitimate. I made a deal with the syndicate in the nineties to secure our initial capital. Marcus didn't just inherit my business acumen; he inherited my debts."

Adrian gripped the edges of the diagnostic pad, his knuckles turning white as he listened.

"Clara wasn't just my assistant," Arthur continued, his breathing heavy. "She was their auditor. They placed her in our home to ensure compliance. When I tried to sever ties with them, they poisoned me. Marcus helped them orchestrate my death to seize the board seats."

The old man paused on screen, his cloudy eyes staring directly out of the display as if looking right into Adrian’s soul.

"There is only one way to bring them down legally," Arthur said, leaning closer to the recording device. "The original paper ledger is hidden inside the false bottom of the grand library's floor vault—the exact spot where Lily found this drive. If you expose it, the board will fall, but the company will survive under true ownership. But you must hurry, Adrian. They are liquidating the primary accounts tonight."

The video ended, leaving the screen glowing with a blank, blinking prompt.

Suddenly, the heavy iron door of the holding cell shuddered. A loud, rhythmic thud echoed from the corridor outside, followed by the sound of muffled voices and scraping metal. It wasn't Marcus’s guards.

"Adrian?" a familiar, muffled voice called out through the reinforced steel vent near the floor.

Adrian scrambled over to the vent, pressing his mouth against the metal grille. "Elena? Is that you? How did you find this cell?"

"The police are up top, but they can't breach the main vault without the master override codes," Elena whispered frantically through the mesh. "I used the old maintenance access from the drainage system. I brought someone with me—someone who wants to see Clara burn as much as we do."

A second face appeared in the dim light of the corridor outside—an older man in a worn trench coat, his eyes hardened by decades of corporate espionage and betrayal. It was Arthur Vance’s former chief legal counsel, Thomas Sterling, whom Marcus had banished a decade ago.

"Good to see you in one piece, boy," Sterling whispered, pulling a modified electronic key-coder from his coat pocket and attaching it to the cell's digital keypad. "Your father left me a dead-man's switch too. Now, let's go take back your company."
