Chapter 5 - The Family Betrayal

The cold steel of the pistol barrel gleamed under the sterile blue light of the server racks. Adrian’s mind raced, calculating distances, angles, and the exact weight of the child in his arms. He could not move fast enough to protect Lily if Marcus pulled the trigger.

"Put the gun down, Marcus," Adrian said, his voice terrifyingly calm, masking the volcanic rage boiling beneath his skin. "You think killing me solves this? The moment I entered this estate, my attorney set an automated dead-man's switch. If I don't check in by midnight, every encrypted file on these servers goes straight to the Department of Justice."

Marcus paused, his finger resting lightly on the trigger. He looked over at Clara, searching her face for confirmation. Clara’s expression tightened into a hard, skeptical line.

"He's bluffing," Clara said, though a flicker of doubt danced in her eyes. "Adrian has always been a sentimental fool. He wouldn't risk destroying the family name."

"Try me," Adrian challenged, stepping forward an inch, forcing Marcus to unconsciously take a defensive step back. "You underestimate what a father will do when his child's life is threatened. Look at her, Marcus. She's three years old. What kind of monsters have you and Clara become that you'd terrorize a toddler just to flush out a flash drive?"

Marcus let out a low, breathy laugh, lowering the barrel by a fraction of an inch. "We didn't terrorize her, Adrian. We simply tested her loyalty. And she proved remarkably adaptable. Didn't you, little bird?" Marcus leaned in toward Lily, his voice dripping with condescending affection.

Lily let out a sharp cry of terror and kicked out with her small foot, catching Marcus squarely in the shin. The grown man cursed, stumbling back against a server rack.

Seizing the micro-second of distraction, Adrian spun around, sprinting toward the spiral staircase that led back up to the library. But as his foot hit the first metal step, a deafening explosion rocked the subterranean chamber. The ceiling of the bunker collapsed inward in a cascade of shattered timber and plaster, sealing the exit completely under tons of burning rubble.

Adrian shielded Lily with his body as dust and debris rained down around them. When the smoke cleared, the staircase was completely gone, replaced by a wall of fire.

From the smoke behind them, Marcus stepped through the flames, his expression twisted into a mask of pure malice as he tossed the empty pistol aside and drew a heavy hunting knife from his belt.
