Chapter 8 - The Collapsed Exit

The wall of steam roared down the narrow brick corridor like an oncoming freight train.

"Climb, Elena! Faster!" Adrian yelled, shoving upward against the soles of Elena’s boots as she hauled herself and Lily up the rusted rungs of the ladder.

Sparks and blinding white smoke filled the lower section of the tunnel, charring the brickwork and suffocating the oxygen out of the air. Adrian scrambled up right behind them, his fingers scraping desperately against the ice-cold iron. Just as his boots cleared the waterline, the lower bracket of the ladder sheared completely off the wall under the intense heat and pressure.

With a metallic shriek, the entire ladder section twisted violently, dangling by a single upper bolt over the rushing torrent below.

"Hold on!" Adrian roared, wrapping his arms around the vertical rail and bracing his back against the damp concrete wall. He used his own body as a human anchor, taking the full weight of Elena and Lily as they swung dangerously over the abyss.

Elena clutched Lily tightly to her chest, her knuckles turning white as she gripped the upper rung. "I've got her, Mr. Vance! Don't let go!"

"I've got you both," Adrian strained, his muscles burning with agonizing pain as the heat from below singed the fabric of his trousers.

Above them, a heavy steel manhole cover blocked the exit shaft, secured with a combination padlock. Adrian looked up, measuring the distance. Reaching out with one trembling hand while keeping his grip secure with the other, he hammered the heavy metal housing of his smartphone against the padlock’s shackle, using it as an improvised hammer.

Clang! Clang!

The casing cracked, but the lock held. Below them, through the smoke and steam, two figures emerged from the blown-out hatch. Even through the haze, Adrian recognized the tall, imposing silhouette of Marcus Vance, holding a portable thermal lance that hissed with a blinding blue flame.

"End of the line, big brother!" Marcus’s voice echoed maliciously up the shaft.

Adrian struck the padlock one final time with all his remaining strength. The shackle snapped. With a frantic shove, he pushed the heavy manhole cover upward, sending it crashing into the street above as a burst of cool, fresh night air and the ambient sound of city traffic flooded into the dark shaft.

"Go! Get out into the street!" Adrian shouted to Elena, boosting her and Lily through the opening.

Elena tumbled out onto the asphalt of a busy downtown intersection, clutching Lily safely in her arms. But before Adrian could pull himself up through the opening, a heavy steel cable wrapped tightly around his ankle, dragging him down into the darkness.
