Chapter 6 - The Flames of the Vault

The heat from the burning timber rolled over them in fierce, suffocating waves. The sprinkler system had failed, short-circuited by the fallen wiring of the server racks, leaving the subterranean bunker to turn into a blazing cage. Adrian backed away from the wall of fire, his boots crunching on shards of glass and pulverized drywall.

"There's no way out, big brother," Marcus’s voice echoed through the crackle of burning cables. He emerged from the smoke, the heavy hunting knife catching the orange glare of the flames. "Dad designed this vault to be an impenetrable fortress. Which means, by default, it is also a very efficient crematorium."

Clara stood a few paces behind Marcus, her burgundy dress stained with soot, watching the scene with cold detachment. She made no move to stop him, her arms crossed tightly over her chest.

"You're insane, Marcus," Adrian said, shifting Lily higher onto his hip. The toddler was coughing violently, her small face streaked with soot and tears, her white bows now scorched and blackened. "If you kill us, you'll never unlock the offshore accounts. The encryption keys are biometrically linked to my DNA."

Marcus stopped pacing, a wicked grin spreading across his face. "Who said anything about killing you right away? We just need you unconscious long enough to harvest what we need."

Before Adrian could react, a heavy iron maintenance hatch in the far corner of the bunker—one previously hidden behind a movable server rack—popped open with a loud pneumatic hiss. Cool, damp air rushed into the superheated room, smelling faintly of old earth and stagnant river water.

Clara’s eyes widened in sudden alarm as a figure emerged from the dark tunnel beyond the hatch, silhouetted against the dim light of the storm drains below.

"Get away from them!" a sharp, desperate voice shouted over the roar of the fire.

It was Elena, Lily’s mother and the estate’s head housekeeper, who had supposedly been fired and escorted off the grounds an hour ago. She held a heavy industrial wrench in her hands, her face caked in dirt, her eyes burning with a fierce, protective maternal fury.

Marcus spun around, sneering as he lunged toward Elena with the knife raised. Elena didn't flinch; she swung the heavy wrench with all her might, catching Marcus squarely across the jaw with a sickening crunch that echoed over the fire. Marcus collapsed instantly onto the grating, unconscious.

"Elena!" Adrian called out, rushing toward the open hatch with Lily in his arms.

Elena grabbed Adrian’s jacket, pulling them both through the narrow opening just as Clara reached out and slammed the heavy iron hatch shut behind them, locking it with a heavy deadbolt from the inside.
