Chapter 9 - The Offshore Trail

The lead officer snapped his head around just in time to see Victoria turn on her heel and sprint toward the idling black sedan parked at the edge of the circular driveway. Her white silk dress billowed behind her in the cold wind like a ghost fleeing into the night.

"Hey! Stop right there!" the second officer shouted, drawing his flashlight and taking off in pursuit across the manicured lawn.

It was too late. Victoria threw herself into the passenger side of the sedan, and the vehicle peeled out with a screech of tires, kicking up gravel before vanishing down the long, tree-lined private drive into the darkness.

"Damn it," the lead officer muttered into his shoulder radio, calling in a description and a BOLO alert for the fleeing vehicle. He turned back to Daniel, his expression a mix of skepticism and reluctant apology as he unlocked the steel handcuffs around Daniel's wrists. "Mr. Sterling, I’m releasing you for now, but this situation is far from resolved. We’re going to need you down at the station to file a formal report and hand over those financial records."

Daniel rubbed his bruised wrists, letting out a long, shuddering breath. The cold night air hit his skin as he looked over at Elena, who was still kneeling on the stone steps, holding Lily close. The little girl’s face was buried in her mother’s coat, finally quieted from her tears, though her small shoulders still trembled occasionally.

"Thank you," Daniel said quietly, stepping closer to them. His voice was thick with emotion, carrying the heavy weight of years of misplaced blame and stubborn pride. "Elena... I am so sorry. For everything. You tried to warn me, and I wouldn't listen."

Elena looked up, her dark eyes meeting his. There was no triumph in her gaze, only a deep, exhausted sorrow. "An apology doesn't fix what she took from Lily, Daniel. Or the years she spent poisoning your life. Victoria is a professional chameleon. She didn't just steal your money; she hunted your family down."

"How did you find out?" Daniel asked, running a hand through his hair, staring down at the spot where Victoria's car had just vanished. "How did you get the offshore wire transfers?"

"Because she made a mistake," Elena said, standing up gracefully while keeping one arm securely around Lily. She reached into her Manila folder and pulled out a printed transcript. "When she transferred the funds, she used the same digital signature stamp that she used a decade ago in Chicago under her real maiden name. My private investigator flagged it this morning."

Daniel stared at the paper, the puzzle pieces finally locking into place. "She planned this from the very beginning. The charity gala, our marriage... it was all a setup to take control of the Sterling trust."

"And she almost got away with it," Elena said softly. She looked down at Lily, then back up at Daniel. "The police are going to be occupied with the financial fraud and her escape. But there’s something else in that envelope Lily brought you. Something Victoria was willing to kill to keep hidden."

Daniel frowned, reaching into his suit pocket and pulling out the heavy legal portfolio Lily had carried in her floral handbag. "What do you mean? I thought this was just my grandfather's amended will and the pocket watch."

May you like

Elena shook her head slowly, the amber porch light catching the determined glint in her eyes. "Open the back flap, Daniel. There's a medical codicil attached to the will. It proves your grandfather didn't die of natural causes."
