Chapter 7 - Sirens in the Night

The crimson emergency lights pulsed rhythmically against the dark mahogany walls of the study, casting long, menacing shadows across the empty bookshelves. Daniel clutched the note in his fist, his heart hammering against his ribs. The realization of how thoroughly Victoria had outmaneuvered him settled like lead in his stomach. She hadn't just stolen documents; she had executed a flawless, premeditated financial execution.

"Dad, what's that noise?" Lily asked, her voice trembling as she clutched her floral handbag tightly against her chest, stepping cautiously into the doorway of the study.

Daniel quickly folded the note and shoved it into his pocket, forcing a calm smile onto his face as he turned to her. He couldn't let her see his panic. Not now.

"It's just the security system acting up, sweetheart," Daniel lied smoothly, standing up and walking over to her. He knelt down so they were eye-to-eye. "Listen to me very carefully. We need to leave this house right now. Can you be very brave for me?"

Lily nodded solemnly, her dark eyes wide with intelligence and fear. "Is it because of the bad lady?"

"Yes," Daniel said, taking her small hand in his. "We’re going to go find your mother. She was right about everything, and we need to talk to her."

Before they could turn toward the hallway, the sharp, wailing sirens of approaching police cruisers cut through the night air, growing louder by the second until the flashing blue and red lights bled through the tall windows of the mansion. Daniel froze. The automated security breach notification he had triggered by forcing the study door open had automatically routed a silent alarm to the local precinct. But Victoria had been too fast; by the time the police arrived, she would already be gone, leaving him trapped in a house that technically no longer belonged to him.

Heavy footsteps echoed on the front porch, followed by a loud, authoritative knock on the grand double doors.

"Police! Open up!" a deep voice commanded from the entryway.

"Stay here, Lily. I'll be right back," Daniel instructed, standing up and walking briskly down the dim corridor toward the main foyer.

When he reached the grand hallway, two uniformed police officers were already standing inside the open double doors, their flashlights cutting through the dim interior. Standing behind them, wrapped in a blanket and feigning absolute hysterics, was Victoria.

"Officer, thank God you're here!" Victoria cried out, pointing directly at Daniel as he stepped into the light. "That’s him! He’s the one who threatened me and stole classified family documents!"

Daniel stopped dead in his tracks, staring at her in absolute disbelief. The sheer audacity of her plan left him temporarily speechless. She hadn't fled; she had intercepted the police at the gates and flipped the narrative entirely.

"Mr. Daniel Sterling?" the lead officer asked, placing his hand near the holster of his service weapon as he stepped forward. "We received a distress call regarding a violent altercation and grand larceny at this residence. Put your hands where we can see them."
