Chapter 8 - The Handcuffs and the Heirloom

The metallic click of the handcuffs securing Daniel’s wrists together echoed sharply off the marble floor of the grand entryway. The cold steel felt surreal against his skin, a stark contrast to the tailored black suit that had represented his power and status just an hour ago.
"This is a mistake," Daniel said, keeping his voice carefully controlled despite the white-hot fury burning in his chest. He glared at Victoria, who stood safely behind the lead officer, her expression a masterclass in feigned trauma. "Ask her about the safe. Ask her about the transfer papers."
"Mr. Sterling, you can explain everything down at the precinct," the officer replied flatly, his grip firm on Daniel's elbow as he guided him toward the open double doors. "Right now, your wife has filed a restraining order and presented verified legal documentation proving she holds sole trusteeship of this property."
"She forged those documents!" Daniel protested, looking back anxiously toward the dark hallway. "Officer, my daughter is still inside. Please, let me—"
"Lily!" a sharp, frantic voice cut through the cool night air from the bottom of the grand staircase.
Daniel stopped, straining against the officer's grip. Emerging from the shadows of the hallway was Elena. Her dark hair was disheveled, and she wore a simple wool coat thrown hurriedly over her clothes, but her eyes blazed with fierce, protective determination. She rushed forward, dropping to her knees right in front of Lily, who immediately launched herself into her mother's arms, sobbing uncontrollably.
"Mommy! The police took dad, and the bad lady stole everything!" Lily cried into Elena's shoulder.
Elena held her tight, glaring up at Victoria with pure hatred before shifting her gaze to the police officers and finally to Daniel. She stood up slowly, keeping Lily shielded behind her.
"Officer, you are arresting the wrong person," Elena said, her voice ringing clear and steady in the crisp night air. "Victoria Sterling is a fugitive. Her real name is Victoria Vance, and she has an active warrant out of Chicago for financial fraud and elder abuse dating back ten years."
Victoria flinched visibly, her composure cracking for a fraction of a second before she plastered a fragile smile back onto her face. "Don't listen to her, officer. Elena is clinically delusional. She lost custody years ago for a reason. She’s working with him to harass me."
"Is that right?" the officer muttered, looking back and forth between them, clearly unsure of who to believe.
Elena reached into the deep pocket of her wool coat and pulled out a thick, sealed Manila folder, holding it up for the officers to see. "Inside this folder are certified bank wire transfers routed from Daniel's corporate accounts to an offshore shell company controlled by Victoria under an alias, dated less than forty-eight hours ago."
Victoria’s face drained of all color. She took an involuntary step back toward her waiting luxury sedan at the edge of the driveway.

"Stop her!" Daniel shouted. "She’s running!"
