Chapter 12 - The Abandoned Drydock

The salt-heavy wind whipped off the dark, churning waters of the harbor, howling through the rusted skeleton of the abandoned shipyard. The sprawling industrial terminal loomed like a jagged monolith against the starless night sky. A single, flickering halogen light illuminated the loading bay of Warehouse 4, casting long, erratic shadows across the cracked concrete.
Elena’s sedan rolled to a stop behind a stack of rusted shipping containers, its headlights doused to avoid drawing attention. The engine ticked softly as it cooled in the bitter night air.
Daniel cut the ignition and reached over to check the glove compartment, his fingers brushing the cold metal of a registered emergency flare gun. He looked across the dashboard at Elena, whose face was illuminated only by the faint glow of her phone screen.
"She’s inside the main office on the second-level catwalk," Elena whispered, tapping the screen to reveal a live satellite feed. "The terminal servers are humming. She’s in the middle of the final wire transfer right now."
Daniel nodded, opening his door cautiously. The heavy metal creaked softly in the wind, but the sound was instantly swallowed by the roar of the ocean crashing against the sea wall. "Stay here in the car, Elena. Keep your phone ready to call the federal task force the second I signal."
"Not a chance, Daniel," Elena replied, opening her door on the driver's side and stepping out onto the wet asphalt. "I didn't come this far to sit in a parked car while you confront a murderer alone."
Before Daniel could argue, she slammed her door shut with a muffled thud and moved toward the rusted steel staircase leading up to the loading platform. Realizing arguing with her was futile, Daniel stepped out into the biting wind and followed closely behind, his black suit jacket flapping against his legs.
They slipped through the side personnel door of Warehouse 4, stepping into a vast, cavernous interior filled with towering stacks of decaying wooden crates and rusting machinery parts. Above them, a single metal staircase spiraled upward toward the glass-enclosed office suspended over the drydock floor.
Through the reinforced glass of the second-story office, they could see the pale, elegant silhouette of Victoria in her white silk dress. She was typing furiously on a multi-monitor computer console, her face illuminated by the harsh blue glare of the screens.
Daniel and Elena ascended the metal stairs in absolute silence, each step deliberate and careful. As they reached the catwalk landing outside the office door, Victoria's voice suddenly rang out from the open doorway, chilling them to the bone.

"I knew you wouldn't have the stomach to stay away, Daniel," Victoria called out without even turning around from her screens.
