Chapter 6 - The Empty Vault

The heavy oak double doors slammed shut behind Victoria, leaving a suffocating silence in the grand hallway. Daniel stood motionless, her parting words echoing in his mind like a ticking clock. He looked down at Lily, who was still clutching her floral handbag, her small frame shivering in her light pink dress.

"Are you okay, sweetheart?" Daniel asked, his voice softening as he knelt beside her, brushing a stray lock of dark hair from her forehead.

"I'm scared, Dad," Lily whispered, burying her face against his shoulder. "Victoria said bad things are going to happen."

"Nothing is going to happen to you, I promise," Daniel reassured her, holding her tightly. But inside, his own chest was tight with dread. Victoria’s final warning wasn't just a bitter parting shot; she had spoken with too much certainty.

He stood up, taking Lily’s small hand in his. "Come with me, Lily. We need to check something in my study."

They walked down the long, dimly lit corridor toward the back of the mansion. The Sterling estate had been in his family for generations, a sprawling testament to wealth and architectural grandeur. But as they approached his private office, Daniel noticed something wrong. The heavy brass handles on the study doors were slightly ajar, and the smart-lock keypad on the doorframe was blinking a steady, warning red.

"That's impossible," Daniel muttered, punching in his master biometric code. The system beeped angrily, flashing an error message across the small screen: Access Denied. Master Authority Revoked.

"Dad?" Lily looked up at him, sensing his tension.

"Stay right here, Lily," Daniel instructed gently, stepping forward and shoving the heavy mahogany door open with his shoulder.

The study was dark, the amber desk lamp casting long, distorted shadows across the leather armchairs. But it was the massive iron floor safe tucked behind the executive desk that drew his immediate attention. The heavy steel door of the safe was swung wide open, its interior completely exposed.

Daniel rushed across the room and dropped to his knees. He flicked on the small flashlight of his phone and peered inside the reinforced steel cavity. It was entirely empty. The deed to the estate, the bearer bonds, the historical family trusts, and the physical hard drives containing all his financial records—everything was gone.

"She cleaned it out," Daniel whispered in disbelief, his hands gripping the edge of the empty safe.

A single piece of white stationery lay at the very back of the dark metal interior. Daniel reached inside, his fingers trembling as he pulled it out and unfolded the crisp paper. Written in Victoria’s sharp, elegant handwriting were just a few lines.

“Thanks for the signature on the pre-nuptial addendum last month, darling. By the time you read this, the estate, the accounts, and the corporate holdings are already transferred. You own nothing.”

Daniel stared at the note, the blood rushing in his ears. He wasn't just dealing with a murderer; he had been systematically stripped of his entire legacy.

Suddenly, the red emergency lights of the mansion's security system flared to life, casting an eerie crimson glow across the study walls. A synthesized voice echoed from the ceiling speakers: Perimeter security breached. Local authorities dispatched.
