Chapter 10 - The Hidden Codicil

Daniel’s fingers trembled slightly as he slid the heavy legal document out of the Manila portfolio. The amber porch light flickered overhead, casting long shadows across the courtyard as the police cruisers slowly packed up their gear, their red and blue emergency lights clicking off one by one.

"Look at the bottom signature," Elena instructed quietly, stepping closer so her shoulder brushed his.

Daniel tilted the paper toward the light. Clipped to the back of the amended will was a separate, notarized medical affidavit signed by the chief coroner of the county hospital from ten years ago. The words jumped out at him, sharp and horrifying. Cause of death: Acute digitalis poisoning. Manner of death: Homicide.

"Digitalis?" Daniel whispered, the word feeling foreign and toxic on his tongue. He looked up at Elena, his breath catching in his throat. "My grandfather had a weak heart, but the doctors said he passed in his sleep. They never mentioned poison."

"Because Victoria intercepted the autopsy report before it hit the public registry," Elena explained, her voice steady but laced with a chilling intensity. "She was working as your grandfather's private duty nurse under an assumed name during the final months of his life. When he discovered she was quietly liquidating his secondary accounts, he threatened to cut her out of the trust entirely. That was the night he had his fatal 'stroke'."

Daniel stared at the document, the horrific reality crashing down upon him with devastating clarity. The photograph he had found earlier in the study—the one of Victoria standing over his grandfather's wheelchair with a syringe—wasn't a coincidence or a clever deepfake. It was the exact moment of the murder.

"She murdered him," Daniel said, his voice dropping to a harsh, choked whisper. He gripped the edges of the paper so tightly that the crisp legal stock began to tear. "And I married her. I brought her into this house, gave her my grandfather's name, and pushed you away because I was too blind to see what she was."

"Stop torturing yourself, Daniel," Elena said firmly, placing a gentle hand on his forearm. Her touch grounded him, pulling him back from the precipice of despair. "Victoria is a master manipulator. She preys on pride and isolation. You weren't the first person she fooled, and if we don't act quickly, you won't be her last victim."

Lily stirred against Elena’s side, looking up with tired, heavy eyes. "Can we go home now, mommy? I'm cold."

Elena’s expression softened immediately. She knelt down and wrapped her own wool scarf around Lily’s neck, tucking her dark hair in carefully. "We're going to go to my place, sweetheart. It's safe there. Your dad is going to come with us."

Daniel looked down at his daughter, then back at the dark, silent mansion that had been his family's fortress for generations. It no longer felt like a home. It felt like a crime scene.

"My apartment is secure," Elena said, looking up at Daniel. "My lawyer has copies of everything, and the local precinct has already put out an APB on Victoria's vehicle. But she has friends in high places, Daniel. People who helped her wipe her identity clean a decade ago. She won't stay hidden for long."

"Then we don't wait for her to come to us," Daniel said, his jaw tightening into a hard, resolute line. He slid the documents securely back into the floral handbag Lily handed him. "We finish this tonight."
