Chapter 4 - Shadows in the Guest House

The weight of the golden pocket watch seemed to crush the oxygen out of the hallway. Victoria stared at the vintage heirloom, her lips parting, but no words came out. The pristine confidence that usually defined her presence in the mansion had completely evaporated, leaving behind a cornered, desperate woman.
"You lied to me," Daniel said, his voice dropping to a low, gravelly whisper. Every step he took toward her was deliberate, heavy with the realization of a massive betrayal. "When we met, you told me you grew up across the state. You told me you had no connection to my family’s estate prior to our introduction at the charity gala."
"Daniel, listen to me," Victoria finally managed, her voice cracking as she raised her hands defensively. "Things were complicated back then. My family lost everything. I needed a fresh start. I didn't know who you were when we first met—well, not at first. But when I found out, by then, I loved you."
"You loved the name. You loved the money," Daniel corrected her sharply. He stopped just inches away from her, towering over her in his tailored black suit. "And when my grandfather tried to change the trust to ensure the lineage remained protected, you found a way to make sure his wishes were buried."
Lily clutched her floral handbag tighter, watching the confrontation with a maturity far beyond her years. "Mom said Victoria locked grandfather in the study the night before he got sick," she piped up in the quiet hallway.
Victoria whipped her head toward the young girl, her eyes flashing with sudden, unfiltered malice. "Shut up, you little liar! You don't know anything about what happened!"
"Don't you ever yell at my daughter again," Daniel roared, his restraint finally snapping. He grabbed Victoria by the arm, pulling her away from the wall with enough force to make her stumble.
"Daniel, stop! You're hurting me!" Victoria screamed, abandoning all pretense of elegance as she tried to pull away from his grip.
"You spent years poisoning my relationship with Elena, painting her as unstable, keeping Lily away from this house, all so you could control the narrative and secure the estate," Daniel said, his breathing heavy, his chest rising and falling beneath his crisp white shirt. "And all this time, the proof of your deceit was sitting right under our noses."
He reached down to pick up the remaining papers that had fallen from the envelope during the scuffle. As he flattened the crumpled sheets against his palm, a photograph slid out and fluttered to the polished floorboards.
Daniel bent down and picked it up. His eyes widened in absolute disbelief as he looked at the image. It was a photograph taken inside the old estate library, dated the exact night his grandfather suffered his fatal stroke.

And standing directly beside the elderly man’s wheelchair, holding a syringe with a cold, calculating smile, was a much younger Victoria.
