Chapter 11 - The Safe House

The safe house was a modest, nondescript apartment located on the quiet outskirts of the city, far away from the sprawling, ornate gates of the Sterling estate. The interior was warm, smelling faintly of brewed chamomile tea and old paper. The walls were lined with heavy bookcases, and a small, soft lamp cast a gentle, golden glow across the living room.

Lily had finally fallen asleep on the floral-patterned sofa, curled up under a thick knitted quilt with her floral handbag resting securely on the floor right beside her small hand.

Daniel sat at the small wooden kitchen table, the harsh light of a desk lamp illuminating the stolen documents spread out before him. Elena placed a steaming mug of black coffee in front of him before pulling out the chair opposite and sitting down.

"She’s heading north," Elena said quietly, keeping her voice low so as not to wake the sleeping child. "My investigator tracked the toll tag on her sedan. She crossed the state line toward the old industrial harbor twenty minutes ago."

Daniel looked up from the papers, his brow furrowing. "The harbor? There's nothing there except the abandoned shipyard my family sold off years ago."

"Not completely abandoned," Elena corrected him, sliding a printed property deed across the table. "Victoria kept a deed in her maiden name for one of the drydock warehouses. That’s where she’s been laundering the trust funds through dummy shipping corporations."

Daniel stared at the document. Every piece of the puzzle was sliding into place with terrifying precision. "She’s going to access the offshore accounts from the terminal servers before the federal freeze hits the international banks. If she transfers those funds to a non-extradition country by midnight, we’ll never touch the money, and she’ll vanish for good."

"Which is why we can't wait for the local police jurisdiction to catch up," Elena said firmly, leaning forward, her dark eyes intense. "By the time their paperwork clears across state lines, she’ll be boarding a private freighter bound for the Mediterranean."

Daniel stood up abruptly, pacing the small kitchen space. The restrained emotion he had maintained all evening threatened to boil over. "I'm going after her."

"Alone? That's suicide, Daniel," Elena warned, standing up to block his path. "Victoria is desperate, and a cornered animal is dangerous. She has access to resources we don't even know about."

"I'm not letting her run away with my family's legacy, and I'm certainly not letting her threaten my daughter ever again," Daniel said, his voice hard and absolute. He looked down at Elena, seeing the fierce, unyielding strength that he had once foolishly taken for weakness. "I need your help, Elena. We need to catch her before she hits the terminal."

Elena held his gaze for a long, silent moment, measuring his resolve. Slowly, a faint, resolute nod answered him. She reached into her coat pocket and pulled out a heavy set of keys, tossing them onto the table.

"My car's outside," Elena said. "Let's go end this."
