Chapter 14 - The Final Transfer

A deafening crack echoed through the glass-enclosed office as the revolver discharged into the ceiling, raining down a shower of drywall dust and acoustic tiles. Victoria screamed in rage and pain as Daniel wrestled the weapon from her grip, sending it clattering across the metal floorboards.
Elena rushed forward, grabbing Victoria by the shoulders and pinning her securely against the heavy back of the office chair, subduing her frantic thrashing with surprising physical force.
"Get off me! Let me go!" Victoria shrieked, abandoning all her elegance as she clawed blindly at Elena’s arms.
Daniel didn't hesitate. He slammed his hand down onto the master keyboard, hammering the physical escape key just as the progress bar on the screen reached one hundred percent. A bright red error box flashed across the primary monitor: Transaction Aborted. Security Override Protocol Engaged. Asset Freeze Confirmed.
"No! No, you idiot! You ruined it!" Victoria screamed, tears of genuine frustration spilling down her cheeks as she realized years of meticulous planning had just evaporated in a single second.
Heavy boots thundered up the metal staircase outside the office doors, followed by the shouted commands of federal agents and local police officers bursting into the warehouse.
"Federal agents! Nobody move!" a voice boomed from the catwalk.
The glass office door was shoved wide open, and three armed officers poured into the room, their weapons drawn and ready. They froze for a split second, taking in the scene: Daniel standing over the smoking computer console, Elena holding a struggling Victoria pinned to a chair, and a discarded revolver lying near the desk.
"Drop your weapons and step back!" the lead agent commanded, his eyes fixed on Daniel.
Daniel immediately raised his hands, stepping back from the desk. "I'm unarmed. She’s the one you want. She has a firearm by the chair, and she’s a fugitive wanted for murder and corporate fraud."
Elena released her grip on Victoria, stepping back smoothly while keeping her hands visible. Two officers immediately moved in, forcing Victoria to her feet and snapping heavy steel handcuffs around her wrists with professional efficiency.
"You can't do this to me! Do you know who I am?" Victoria screamed hysterically, her white silk dress stained with dust and oil as she was roughly hauled toward the doorway. "My lawyers will destroy every single one of you!"
"Save it for the judge, Ms. Vance," the federal agent said coldly, pushing her out onto the catwalk and leading her down the stairs toward the waiting cruisers below.
The office grew suddenly quiet. The hum of the computer servers died down as the system shut itself down entirely. Daniel let out a long, shuddering breath, his knees suddenly feeling weak as the adrenaline rush began to fade. He turned to look at Elena, who was standing quietly by the window, watching the flashing red and blue lights reflect off the dark waters of the harbor below.
"It's over," Daniel whispered, the weight of the past five years finally lifting from his shoulders.
Elena turned to face him, a tired, genuine smile finally gracing her lips. "Yes, Daniel. It’s finally over."

Before either of them could speak another word, Elena’s cell phone sitting on the desk suddenly began to buzz relentlessly, flashing an incoming emergency alert from the babysitter watching Lily back at the safe house.
