Chapter 1 - The Echo of Acrimony

The grand hallway of the Sterling estate echoed with the sharp intake of breath. Lily clutched her floral handbag tightly against her chest, the fabric damp from her tears. Victoria stood a few paces away, her elegant white silk dress catching the amber light of the chandelier, her posture rigid.

"Dad! Victoria said I don't belong in this house," Lily cried out, her voice trembling with genuine hurt as she looked toward the towering double doors.

Victoria took a sharp step forward, her face hardening into an expression of controlled fury. She pointed a manicured finger directly at the young girl.

"Stop crying! Give me that bag and leave before Daniel sees what you brought inside," Victoria hissed, her voice sharp and urgent, stripped of any maternal warmth.

Daniel appeared at the top of the grand staircase, his black suit immaculate against the dark wood. He descended slowly, his eyes narrowing as he took in the scene below.

"Step away from my daughter," Daniel said, his voice dangerously low, cutting through the tense air like a blade.

Victoria spun around instantly, her expression shifting from venomous anger to fragile innocence in a heartbeat. She extended a trembling hand toward him, her eyes wide with manufactured distress.

"Daniel, she misunderstood me," Victoria pleaded, her voice shaking.

"Why were you trying to take her bag?" Daniel demanded, ignoring her performance entirely as he reached the bottom landing.

Daniel knelt beside Lily, his gaze softening as he looked into her tear-stained face. Inside the open flap of the floral handbag, a heavy, cream-colored envelope lay exposed.

"Mom told me to give it only to dad," Lily whispered.

Daniel reached out, his fingers brushing the paper. "Did your mother say what was in it?"

Before Lily could answer, Victoria lunged forward, desperately trying to snatch the handbag from Daniel's grip.
