Chapter 5 - The Frame of Innocence

Daniel stood frozen, the photograph burning against his fingertips. The ink on the date stamp was clear, and the background details—the heavy velvet drapes, the unique mahogany desk, the specific brass lamp—undeniably placed Victoria in the restricted East Wing on the night of his grandfather's sudden demise.

"Where did you get this?" Daniel whispered, his voice trembling with a mixture of grief and pure rage. He looked up, his eyes locking onto Victoria with a terrifying intensity. "Explain this, Victoria. Right now."

Victoria stared down at the photograph, her chest rising and falling rapidly under her white silk dress. The color completely drained from her face, leaving her skin chalky and pale. For a fleeting second, she looked as though she might collapse. Then, slowly, a strange, chilling transformation washed over her features. The panic vanished, replaced by a cold, hardened resolve.

"You think this makes you clever, Daniel?" Victoria asked, her voice dropping all its previous warmth, turning razor-sharp. She wrenched her arm free from his grip with surprising strength, stepping back and smoothing the front of her dress with shaking hands. "You think a blurry polaroid from ten years ago undoes everything we’ve built together? The courts will laugh you out of the room. It’s inadmissible. It’s hearsay."

"It’s murder, Victoria," Daniel said, taking a slow step toward her, his fists clenched at his sides. "The statute of limitations on premeditated homicide doesn't apply when new physical evidence comes to light. And that envelope contains the original medical examiner's report that was supposedly destroyed in the archive fire."

Victoria let out a sharp, brittle laugh that echoed harshly off the high ceilings of the grand hallway. "And who do you think is going to authenticate it? Your precious Elena? The woman who spent three years in a psychiatric facility after your divorce? No jury in the country is going to take the word of a bitter ex-wife and a vindictive child over mine."

Lily gasped, shrinking back toward the double doors, clutching her floral handbag as if it were a shield. "My mom isn't crazy!" she cried out, tears spilling over her lashes once again.

Daniel looked between the weeping child and the cold, unyielding woman he had called his wife for five years. The realization of how deeply he had been manipulated hit him with physical force. He had trusted Victoria blindly, casting Elena out as the villain when all along, the monster had been sitting at the head of his dining table.

"Get out," Daniel said quietly, pointing toward the heavy front doors.

Victoria stopped laughing. Her eyes widened in genuine shock. "What? Daniel, you can't be serious. You're throwing me out over some old papers?"

"I said, get out of my house," Daniel repeated, his voice echoing through the mansion with absolute, chilling finality. "Before I call the police and let them handle this."

Victoria glared at him, pure venom flashing in her eyes. She grabbed her designer clutch from the entry table and turned toward the doors. But before she pushed them open, she turned back with a sinister smirk. "You think getting rid of me solves everything, Daniel? Check the safe in your private study. You might find you don't even own this house anymore."
