Chapter 9 - The Digital Coup

The download progress bar on the table's screen hit one hundred percent with a soft, melodic chime. Alex pulled the portable decryptor free from the USB port and slipped it securely into the chest pocket of his tactical vest. The red emergency strobe lights continued to pulse against the concrete walls, casting long, shifting shadows that danced across the room. Hailey stood frozen, her mind reeling as the true scale of the Kingston family civil war finally came into focus.

"You didn't help your mother trap me," Hailey realized aloud, the pieces falling into place with terrifying clarity. "You used my plot as a distraction so you could hack into the primary Kingston Trust server while everyone was focused on my trial."

Alex chuckled, a cold, low sound that lacked any trace of humor. He walked slowly toward her, his boots stepping over the unconscious man crumpled against the wall.

"My mother and father are relics of an old world, Hailey," Alex said smoothly, stopping just an arm's length away from her. "They believe in physical dominance, real estate monopolies, and violent intimidation. They think owning a hundred billion dollars means playing God in a gilded cage. But the real power in the twenty-first century isn't held by the people who own the money—it's held by the person who controls the encryption keys."

Hailey looked down at the confession forms and the Kingston Maritime labor contract still scattered across the table. "And what about me? If you have the servers, why did you let them put me down here?"

"Because you were the perfect catalyst," Alex replied, reaching out to gently touch the edge of the ruined white gown she was wearing. His fingers brushed against the fabric with an eerie, detached curiosity. "My parents needed a scapegoat to cover up the missing billions you tried to siphon off. And I needed my parents to be completely distracted by your betrayal so I could execute the ultimate transfer of power."

Hailey shrank away from his touch, her blue eyes wide with a mixture of fear and newfound realization. "You planned the entire thing. Even the night I attacked your mother... you knew I was going to try to kill her."

Alex didn't answer immediately. He stared at her for a long moment, his dark eyes entirely devoid of empathy.

"Let's just say I left the back door unlocked," Alex said softly. "My mother has been running Kingston Industries with an iron fist for thirty years. It was time for a management change. And now, with my parents locked in the upper penthouse suite and all their administrative privileges revoked by my new protocol, I am the sole controller of the Kingston empire."

Hailey’s breath hitched. "If your parents are locked in the penthouse... how long before they override your firewall?"

Alex smiled, pulling out his smartphone and tapping the screen to display a live security feed of the upper-level penthouse suite.

"They won't," Alex said, turning the screen toward her. "Because I just sealed the blast doors, and the oxygen levels in their suite are currently dropping by five percent every minute."
